Betrayal, by Harold Pinter

“One of the most essential artists produced by the twentieth century. Pinter’s work gets under our skin more than that of any living playwright.” —New York Times

Upon its premiere at the National Theatre, Betrayal was immediately recognized as a masterpiece. It won the Olivier Award for best new play, and has since been performed all around the world and made into an Academy Award-nominated film starring Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley, and Patricia Hodge. Betrayal begins with a meeting between adulterous lovers, Emma and Jerry, two years after their affair has ended. During the nine scenes of the play, we move back in time through the stages of their affair, ending in the house of Emma and her husband Robert, Jerry’s best friend.

“[Betrayal] deals with the shifting balance of power in triangular relationships, and with the pain of loss. . . . Pinter probes the corrosive nature of betrayal . . . a world where pain and loss are explored with poetic precision.” —Guardian

“Betrayal is an exquisite play, brilliantly simple in form and courageous in its search for a poetry that turns banality into a melancholy beauty.” —Newsweek

“There is hardly a line into which desire, pain, alarm, sorrow, rage or some

A play that works well on the page
By Peter J. Orvetti
As an actor and theatergoer, I am unforgivably lacking in knowledge of Pinter -- this is the first and only of his plays that I've read, and I've seen only "Old Times" on stage. After both experiences, I want to learn (and see) more.

Some dialogue-driven plays do not work well on the page, especially if the conversation is clipped and oblique as it is here. But "Betrayal" flows well on the page, and it is easy to hear the characters' voices in your head as you proceed. These snippets of overheard conversation work well.

The story itself is fairly unremarkable. The cleverness of "Betrayal" is that Pinter tells the story of this affair backwards, so at the end we are experiencing the casual, friendly conversation between friends that, we as viewers or readers know, will lead to intimacy. At what point does a joke or a glance between just friends-so-far become something else?

Worth Reading/Worth Seeing
By golfer
This play was part of a book discussion group and a performance by an excellent local theater group. (Sacramento) I was reluctant to engage because of my earlier experiences with Pinter, were unsatisfactory. This is not the case today. "Betrayal" is an excellent story.
