About the Author
Dr. Johanna K. Moisander is Professor of Corporate Communication at Aalto University School of Business, Department of Communication. Her research interests center on cultural and practice-based approaches to management and organization studies and consumer culture theory. At the moment, her empirical research focuses on media convergence and strategic change in the media industry.

I received my Ph.D. from the Aalto University School of Economics in 2004. Since 2005, I have acted as a marketing professor at the University of Lapland. Moreover, I have 10 years of business experience within creative knowledge industries. My research interests center, firstly, on cultural and critical approaches to consumption, marketing and tourism. Drawing upon practice-based approaches, anthropology, cultural studies, feminist studies and semiotics, I have explored topics such as body and gender, service work, knowing, sensing, and weather. Secondly, my research interests center on the development of qualitative research methodologies (ethnographies, focus groups, interviews, projective techniques, narratives). My most recent research project investigates sleep as a social practice in the context of tourism, consumer culture and media-intensive economy. The other recent project is concerned with the role of all the senses in the meaning-making processes of consumer culture and business organizations, moving thereby beyond the visual gaze.

A serious book!!

Fortunately, this is not the typical High Speed Newtworks book. Unlike most authors, Stallings goes as deep as required. Beginning with descriptions for ATM and high speed LANs, the book explain how to modelate and estimate the actual network performance, by using statistics models. (An overview of probability and stochastic processes is included).
The mechanisms for improve the network performance (as different queueing strategies), and managing network congestion are explained.
Some IP related topics (routinng protocols, RSVP, Multicast)are also included.
Part 7 (optional for most readers) is concerned with compression and information theory (JPEG and MPEG algorithms are explained).
As you see, a serious book, not a "bubbleware" book.

if u want to study high speed networking then please dont buy this book and waste your money. there are many other books which cover the same areas in equal detail. this book will not only confuse you but it will also muddle the existing concepts that u had in mind... stallings is a good writer.. he has written good books in the past.. but this time he has not come up to the level which is expected from him.

Good mathematical analysis

This is a copy from the famous book of Stallings "data and computer networks".
Even the diagrams are the same, but this book does have a tremendous amoubt of numerical computations, so you can satisfy the mathematicians in you. Now that I have had a course in data communication where the other book I mentioned above was used, I understand this book.
This book is definitly not to be the 1st book on datacom, definitely the 2nd. This is an extremely boring book though, it does not invite you to read it, even though it has some very interesting topics in it.

Nice story! I haven't read a scottish historical since Julie Garwood wrote them. I felt happy and nostalgic reading Battlesong.

Laren is sweet and intelligent. She made the best of the life that was forced upon her at such a young age. I'm so glad Arthur ended up being a good husband, even if he was a bit gruff at first and didn't think Laren was capable of all she'd accomplished with his lands. When he stood up for her to the old steward, I fell in love with him! And, okay, I wanted to bash him over the head with a frying pan once or twice near the finale. "Just...listen...to your wife...moron!"

But it all ended well. I wish I could've seen Laren's meeting with her visitor at the very last. Hmm...maybe it'll be in the next book in the series. Fingers crossed!

About the Author
Lawrence A. Clayton attended Duke University (BA, 1964) and earned his MA (1969) and PhD (1972) at Tulane University in Latin American History. From 1964 1966 he served as an officer in the US Navy on the USS Donner (LSD-20), cruising both in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet. He was on the faculty of the University of Alabama from 1972 2013, before retiring in 2013. His specialties focused on Latin American history and the history of the Christian church, and he directed the Latin American Studies Program (1980 1992), and acted as Chair of the Department of History (2000 2007) and Interim Chair (2009 2010). He also held two Senior Fulbright Lecturing Awards, one in 1983 to Costa Rica, and one in 1988 to Peru, lecturing at the University of Costa Rica and the University of Lima respectively. In 1983 he served as President of the South Eastern Council on Latin American Studies, and in 1999 held a year-long Pew Evangelical Scholars Fellowship. His publications include Alabama and the Borderlands: From Prehistory to Statehood (1985), Grace: W. R. Grace and Co., The Formative Years, 1850 1930 (1985), The Hispanic Experience in North America: Sources for Study in the United States (1992), The DeSoto Chronicles (1993, prize-winning), A History of Modern Latin America (2nd edition, 2005), Peru and the United States: The Condor and the Eagle (1999) and Bartolome de las Casas and the Conquest of the Americas (2011). Three of his books have been translated and published in Peru and Ecuador. He is presently engaged in writing a book, The Battle for Cuba: Air War over the Bay of Pigs, April 1961, and is working on the script to a new movie on the Doolittle R.

Volume II: De Soto chronicle La Florida is second to Diaz

This work is a complete collection of chronicles for the De Soto expedition into La Florida (which is most of the south-east USA). Due to the fact that this work comprises two volumes of almost 600 pages each, I have so far only read volume II which is the complete account "La Florida" by Garcilaso de la Vega. Following others (including the Narvaez expedition that de Vaca relates) De Soto went into Florida to find gold and eventually settle the new land. Garcilaso used one captain from the expedition as his source and is a great storyteller, claiming his abhorrence of exaggerating the contents, much of it is told with the heroic chivalry and noble virtue of the times, whether speaking of Spaniards or Indians, and always some purposeful enthusiasm. If all you know of De Soto is that he was the first to see the Mississippi, that doesn't begin to say anything about what happens during the expedition, and even to the way those who were on it considered it afterwards. It shows also the real nature of the natives, showing great differences in their treatment of the Spanish, their use of slavery, and the brutatilty they showed towards other tribes. (Not as placid as Las Casas would have you believe). Also describing the native cultures and life-styles to some degree. All wonderful and interesting stories. The volumes contain some maps and black and white illustrations. Volume I contains all the other existant accounts including the more historical one by the Gentleman of Elvas. Well worth the price.

These books are recent translations of the four major accounts of the De Soto expedition - the Gentleman of Elvas, Luys Hernandez de Biedma, Rodrigo Ranjel, and Garcilaso de la Vega, based on the account of the soldier Gonzalo Silvestre. They also include translations of a number of documents related to the expedition and its members.

The books represent a badly needed update of the older translations by Buckingham Smith. They give us a picture of a world of Native American societies with tens or hundreds of thousands of people, ruled by nobles and leaders in ranked hierarchies through ceremony, ritual and belief. And they represent our last real glimpse of these societies at the beginning of the end - before disease, warfare with Europeans, and the shattering effects of De Soto's entrada destroyed the most powerful and complex cultures north of Mesoamerica.

Archaeologist, historian, and ordinary reader alike will find these books fascinating and important.

About the Author
Susan W. Gray has been a member of the Barry University faculty since 1980. She earned a BA from Caldwell College for Women, an MSW at Rutgers University, an Ed.D. at Nova Southeastern University, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Barry University. Dr. Gray is a licensed clinical social worker and brings to Barry a diverse clinical practice background. Her professional interests include clinical supervision, licensure and professional regulation, community mental health, and professional practice in rural areas.

Marilyn Zide was a professor at Barry University, where she taught full time. In addition, she maintained a private practice and also provided agency-based consultation and training workshops in her areas of expertise which included solution-focused therapy, cultural diversity/sensitivity, and bereavement group-work.

Journalist Nathan and lawyer Snedeker, both involved in debunking ritual-abuse cases, have produced a thoughtful investigation of how and why such cases have led to "moral panic" over the past 15 years. They trace how emerging theories about sex abuse?which proclaimed children's truthfulness?led to a situation in which social workers supplanted police as investigators, and how changes in family and gender relations (including victimology feminism) fueled social preoccupation with demonology. They look closely at several cases, including the notorious McMartin case in California, which led to paranoiac attitudes toward public child care and to a growing "ritual-abuse industry." Reproducing case transcripts, the authors show how children's testimony was led; nevertheless, civil libertarians shied away from challenging such cases: "demonization of child sexual abuse as society's ultimate evil has rendered it so holy as to be virtually immune to reasoned analysis." The authors believe that real sexual abuse, especially incest, is underreported, and recommend that investigators be better trained as well as granted only limited immunity from malpractice. More broadly, they see a need to educate children in such a way that they develop psychological and sexual integrity.

Terrific Expose of a Moral Panic that Ruined Lives

This book was a real eye opener for me. It documents the trumped up charges against daycare workers,"sex rings" of parents and grandparents -- accused of the most elaborate and unlikely--even impossible-- crimes against children. None of the charges came spontaneously from children, who in fact insisted nothing had happened. Rather, children were subjected to highly coercive and manipulative interviews by true-believer therapists, repeated over weeks and weeks. the therapists fed the kids the stories they wanted to hear -- and eventually got what they wanted. What was presented as physical evidence of abuse --microscopic bumps and skin tags on genitals --have turned out to be as common in nonabused kids and abused ones. Over a hundred people went to jail, and around a dozen are still there --even though the justice system has tacitly admitted the flaws in the original prosecutions. After all, no one has brought a daycare ritual-abuse case in a decade. What I particularly like about this book is that--unlike some of the other books debunking ritual abuse, repressed memory and the like-- it's written from a feminist perspective. Nathan argues that what women and children need to be safe from abuse is more equality within the family, and more equality for women socially and economically. For her the tragic turn in feminism was the turn toward psychologizing incest and sex abuse and presenting therapy as the remedy, instead of social change. This perspective sets her apart from the dominant strain in the movement against intrusive child advocacy, the "parents' rights" movement, which tends to see children as family propoerty with no rights of their own, and tends to be extremely conservative politically. A wonderful book.

On Reviews of Skeptical Books

Skeptical books? I mean books like this one that question our culture's holiest beliefs - in the continuing and ever-worsening oppression of victimized classes, the coming environmental doom etc. Most of the reviews tend to be positive; after all, interested persons have purchased the book or are shopping for the book. Their point of view is already formed. Then there are the other reviews - usually giving no stars, usually short and scabrous: "This book is part of a conspiracy to trivialize a very real problem. This book has been discredited. It has shoddy research etc." "Discredited" is a great word - applied not to shoddy research but to research that challenges our sacred beliefs.

To get more specific, negative reviewers of this book and its many cousins miss the point. Nathan and her co-authors are not excusing abuse or dismissing it as a possible occurrence. Nor are they denying that memories can be repressed. They are simply arguing two points:
1. People are innocent until proven guilty. (Right?)
and
2. Memories recovered through hypnosis or by other means are not strong enough evidence to convict an accused "perp." As evidence, they are simply unreliable.

Lots of libertarians are on the internet and obviously are disposed to like books of this kind. Then there are others... the true believers, steeped in ideology and unconcerned about the facts in any specific case. Their only concern is with broader principles - "victims must be protected!"; "abuse is a terrible, growing problem!" These principles are fine, but they should not be brought to bear upon the process of determining guilt or innocence. This process should retain its clear focus on evidence and facts. That is the essence of Nathan's argument, as well as those of Ofshe, Terence Campbell, Willard Gaylin and Dorothy Rabinowitz.

Good book but gets lost in the psychology.

Watched the James Woods film Indictment and wanted to know more about his subject. Turns out it didn't exaggerate at all. Some of it is forgivable, if a bunch of noted doctors tell you that the children show physical signs of abuse and the psychologists of the day tell you it is impossible for kids to lie about these things then obviously you are going to arrest and prosecute the alleged abusers. People didn't realise the medical evidence was flawed and how easily kids could be influenced by suggestive interviews (the extracts from the interviews are HORRIFYING in their bias and leading nature). But when you can't find ANY corroborating evidence it's time to have second thoughts, my suspicion is they couldn't simply because of the press hysteria which meant they couldn't admit their doubts having started this circus. And sending a letter out to the parents was the dumbest idea ever, what did they think was going to happen?
When it deals with the trials this book is excellent. Where it falls down is its' attempts to deal with the psychological aspects of it all, it should have simply stuck to the reality of the investigations and the trials. Perhaps one of the most shocking things is the attitude to incest as late as the 70s where it was seen as a mental health issue where abusers were offered therapy rather than being prosecuted and psychologists seemed to blame neglectful wives for their abandoned husbands seducing their daughters as a substitute partner. Thankfully things have changed. The book is also a little out of date with thankfully virtually everyone it mentions in the Kern County cases etc having been released.

About the Author

David Pogue, Yale '85, is the weekly personal-technology columnist for the New York Times and an Emmy award-winning tech correspondent for CBS News. His funny tech videos appear weekly on CNBC. And with 3 million books in print, he is also one of the world's bestselling how- to authors. In 1999, he launched his own series of amusing, practical, and user-friendly computer books called Missing Manuals, which now includes 100 titles.

With sincerest gratitude ...

I try to be a good citizen on Amazon and do reviews of the products I buy (and I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon!), but rarely do I do book reviews--I just figure that's a personal thing. We love books (or not like them as much), for personal reasons that are often not quantifiable. But this is a bit different, this is not a book per say, but a manual. The purpose of the manual was to enable computer dummies (like me), or those less intuitive with technology, to be able to do semi-creative things at least, with the phenomenal tool that is iMovie. I will be writing to the authors of this book as well, but I consider this book to be a gift. A magic box of a book. Even I have been able to follow the easily, meticulously outlined steps/lessons, included in each chapter of the book and make videos/"movies" of my own. The first one was of my mom baking bread, and I know that what I produced, as insignificant as it may be in the scheme of things, is something I will treasure forever. This book also made me feel really good about my computer skills: made me feel like, given good and precise instruction, I too can conquer my tech fears. I know I have just begun to scratch the surface, and really look forward to what my next "movie" will look like. My sincerest GRATITUDE to the authors for the gift of this book, and the creative adventure they have made possible for me.

The “Missing Manual” series, of course, aims to fill gaps that many pieces of software (may) leave by having no – or an inadequate – manual. iMovie The Missing Manual (O’Reilly) looks at Apple’s venerable movie editing software.

The status (in and out of the iLife suite), pricing, versioning, naming, scope, purpose and popularity of Apple’s own iMovie have all varied significantly since the software’s introduction in 1999.

In fact, it was dropped altogether in 2007: iMovie ’08 was an almost entirely different program; and there has already been an iMovie ’11! Now iMovie 10 is available via the MAS for as little as $14.99 (Mac) and $4.99 (iOS).

Add to this checkered history the fact that the media and file formats for the moving image have changed significantly in the past 15 years – chiefly to an all-digital environment. And there is a greater need than ever for a book that will guide the novice in particular, and/or the only minimally-experienced user who wishes to preserve, present and share their movies in the best possible way. Not to mention a source that will guide the user around the ever-evolving layout of the software’s interface, menus and intended workflows.

While such a book must be written with an awareness of the history and technicalities of the field, it’ll only be really useful if it leads users from the puzzlement which caused them to buy the book in the first place to success with the current version of the software because they really can now use it; and use it effectively. A series of sterile descriptions, examples or disconnected help topics isn’t good enough.

iMovie The Missing Manual covers iMovie 10.0 for Mac and iMovie 2.0 for iOS, is such a book and can be recommended for doing everything it sets out to do very well indeed.

Changes

Given this significant series of changes in what various versions of iMovie can and cannot do, and given the changing target groups of users for whom the software is intended, it’s important that a book such as this set out – even for the experienced user – just what can and cannot be achieved with this version; and how to do (almost) everything of which iMovie 10 is capable.

Again, iMovie The Missing Manual does just that – and very well indeed. And turns out to be suitable for novices and more experienced users alike.

In addition to discussing the mass of information on the world, issues, pitfalls and recent developments in the moving digital image, iMovie The Missing Manual is indeed successful in helping you make the best use of this latest version of iMovie.

Specifically, other such volumes often employ an approach which relies too heavily on a linear tutorial. Skip to a particular chapter or section for illumination on, say, image stabilization or precision editing and you’re hampered (often effectively prevented from proceeding) by not having completed prior steps which the author(s) have required – but which you didn’t need, or chose not to complete at that time.

That’s not the case in Pogue’s and Miller’s book here. There is a small number of specific “practice files” available from the O’Reilly website. But they’re for circumstances when data of your own needs to be supplemented; or special cases dealt with.

The authors have managed, if not to isolate every aspect of iMovie so that it becomes independently accessible when described in a 400+ page book, to arrange the information so successfully and logically that the book doubles as a guide and a reference source.

The book is also carefully, cleanly and meticulously illustrated. What’s more, the authors offer just the right amount of background and scene-setting (no puns intended). They cross reference and refine ideas and workflows – especially when they need to be dealt with fro a new angle.

(Pogue and) Miller also know (this version of) iMovie so well that they can drop in extremely helpful tips and recommendations as topics come up in the course of the backbone path of the book… how “Connected audio” clips work, what they can and cannot do [p187], cropping/rotating video [pp 143-147], and the principles of good editing from a cinematic perspective [pp 235-240], for instance.

In its five main parts (the fifth is appendices), the book covers in detail and in depth:

iMovie ‘basics’: an introductory chapter, then chapters on importing; Events; Projects
building a movie (the longest section at almost 200 pages): chapters on creating a movie; chunks; favorites and rejects; transitions; themes and travel maps; effects, stabilization, color fixes, cropping and rotating; titling; sound; photos; trailers; and advanced editing
sharing: via email, the web; to mobile devices and other software, including QuickTime player
iMovie for iOS: seven chapters (60+ pages) on how iDevices handle iMovie to work with almost all the areas already covered for the Mac… projects; themes, titles and transitions; sound; photos; trailers and sharing
the four appendices cover: iMovie, menu by menu (a perennially useful tack); troubleshooting; keyboard shortcuts and an annotated graphic of iMovie’s screen parts etc

Scope

This is certainly a more than adequate coverage of the software. It has the dual advantages of getting the (new or previous) user quickly working with iMovie 10; and enabling them to go beyond a merely recording/archiving/playback exercise. Of course, it’s necessary to be able to understand the concepts, and to find your way around the new interface, and grow comfortable with the (visual) metaphors on which it’s based and know where to look to accomplish all necessary tasks – with as little thought or stumbling as possible. This book is invaluable here.

But it quickly takes the user further than the basics. It explains how, why and when to create specific effects… replay, freeze-frame, fading and so on; cutaways, picture-in-picture; side-by-side shots and even “green-screen” effects. What the publishers call a “book-within-a-book” maps most of this onto the iOS environment; and suggests how to post your results for others to enjoy too.

Production

The layout of the book, the typographical conventions, use of white space, clear color schemes, sidebars, tips and step-by-step lists to achieve results, the comprehensiveness of the index, and particularly the physical size of the screen grabs on the page are all up to The Missing Manual series’ usual high standards.

This is an easy and enjoyable book to use. All URLs, practice files, references to software mentioned and so on are available at the missingmanuals.com website, instead of a CD. Additionally errata discovered since the book’s release can be found online.

Conclusion: although there are online guides and tutorials aplenty for the latest version of iMovie, this excellent volume in the Missing Manual series does great double duty as an introductory guide and well laid-out reference volume. It’s comprehensive, easy to use and thorough. The presence of so many clear illustrations and accessible context, step-by-step instructions; and the way the material is organized and cross-referenced should make this your first stop for supporting materials for iMovie 10.

Pros: Authoritative, accurate and useful; well produced; thorough and broad coverage of all relevant topics; expertly written; the steps to achieve every result covered could hardly be clearer and easier to understand

Cons: none, other than a perhaps rather high price
