Good read. Would definitely recommend.

Great read. I would definitely recommend giving the HASEA Chronicles a read, starting with The Awakening.
SPOILERS BELOW
I've been waiting to read the second book in the HASEA Chronicles for quite a while now after reading the first book, Awakening, several times. Ever since the Matrix came out it seems the "secret world within the world" theme has become played out between shows like Supernatural and movies like the Men in Black, Harry Potter, etc. I find Meczes creation refreshing even if it does mirror that general theme. Although this time it's more like a secret world within the world that runs parallel to another world.
Often times you see writers will have their protagonist make some stupid mistake, that are obvious to the reader, that will make it harder for them to prevail in the end. It's kind of annoying to read sometimes and often an indication of just average writing talent. Something similar does happen to Alex, not going to Sage Faru for advice and bottling his problems inside, but at the same time Meczes finds a clever way give a logical reason for the characters foolish stubbornness, which is the tattoo and the influence of the possession. Alex's foolishness isn't a result of a character flaw, but rather caused by the possessions influence on his decision making capabilities.
I thought that Meczes could have done a better job of hiding the fact that a possessed Alex was traitorous to the HASEA. I felt it was really obvious and the only surprising part was his planned assault on his own brother. I was tempted to give it 4 out 5 stars just because I thought if it had been made less obvious it would have definitely increased the surprise and made it more enjoyable (everyone loves a good twist).
All in all I really liked the book. I enjoy seeing the creatures and characters Meczes creates and develops. A lot of times you see fantasy writers using the same cliched creatures with very little modification. Pixies and fawns aren't quite the dangerous mythical creatures you might imagine, but in Meczes world they are every bit as dangerous as vampires (bloodlings) or werewolves (skinshifters). I also enjoy the fact that he is adding new characters and branching out the story from their perspective. I can only hope he limits the scope of characters so that the novels don't become overly long and tedious like GRRM's SOFAI series.
I rarely write reviews, but I definitely feel the HASEA Chronicles is worthy of one and I look forward to reading future books in the series. I only wished I hadn't read this one in a day because now I'm going to have to wait even longer. haha

Smashed all my expectations

After stumbling across the first book, I was pleasantly surprised at how vast and enthralling a world the writer had created. Thrown into Alex's alternate world, I loved the detail and mythology that had so clearly been painstakingly conceived down to the last detail. Needless to say it was 'unputdownable,' but I was sceptical about how the second in the series could top it.
I've just finished "The Veil: Corruption," and can safely say that this is such an incredible evolution from the author's first novel. Not only is the writing style smoother and more digestible, but the imagery he creates through it is absolutely beautiful, bringing the world of the HASEA Chronicles to life (both the earthly and alternate pandemonian sides. I thought I was lost in the surreality of Alex's world in the first book, but the sequel is so much more, introducing new realms and creatures and bringing the same ingenious and original ideas from The Awakening to the reader.
The characters introduced in the second book are even more pragmatic and 3-dimensional than the first. I felt utterly drawn in back the back story and experiences of every individual, not just Alex. I loved the idea of putting the reader in the mindset of multiple protagonists, and it really helps to identify vicariously with all of their stories. Their emotions and reactions to the unbelievable series of events that unfold is so easy to process and makes this book possibly one of the most engaging I've read in years.
The plot? I don't think I could say enough about the plot. Not only does it move away from the linear narrative of the first book, but it develops Alex's (and the other characters') story into an expansive new world, or in fact a multitude of worlds. I was blown away by the 'epicness' of the story, in a narrative that makes the prequel seem like it was set in a children's playground. I was impressed at some of the ingenious plot twists and and the way so many events seemed to come together so neatly, but yet with a kind of shaky uncertainty that makes you feel you've been both punched in the gut, and soothed gently with a lullaby and a night cap. In essence the author finds the perfect balance between keeping the reader on their toes and gratifying their demands.
Finally, and possibly most importantly, is the badass factor. Something I think carries over from the previous novel. "The Veil Corruption," definitely continues the same ethos of indulging the reader's inner movie lover. Whether you're a fan of fast paced action, supernatural mythology, futuristic technology or simply the age old story of dark vs light, this book really comes into it's own in culminating those not-so-guilty pleasures that all fiction fans crave. However, it somehow manages so both reel back much of the cheese and cliche from the original while making everything bigger and badder. I think this is mostly down to a maturation of the author's writing style, and a dissipation of the over-excitement that comes with writing a first novel, into what is now a more refined but still incredibly passionate realisation of a deep and long-conceived universe.
I guess my main point therefore, is that this book is fantastic. If you loved or even liked the previous, it's pretty safe to say you'll be far from disappointed, and if you didn't, you may be pleasantly surprised at how far the "HASEA Chronicles" has come in only its second instalment. Looking at the leap between the two, I can't wait to see what the third brings, and the series itself could likely become one of the most acclaimed of the decade.
Five stars, a definite must read.

Excellent Follow Up

Ok. It felt like 6 months for me have passed as well since I read the last book. *smirk*
This book was an excellent read. The writer was able to expand on events that happened in the last book and left me satisfied. (I hate doing spoilers)
And throughout the current book we see further glimpses into the Pandemonium world. Which will lead to the next novel if I am to presume correctly.
As this book ended, it went exactly where I was hoping it would go and as they say: "The tide has turned..." So good times and maybe some bad times are ahead. (good for our heroes, bad for the evil side).
Read if you want more, but don't feel bad when this ride ends, it will keep going. My only minor dissatisfaction is that the ride had to stop. Oh well. I'll keep up with him later.
