You could truly delight in the life by reading Bringers Of War: The Portugese In Africa During The Age Of Gunpowder & Sail From The 15th To 18th Century, By John Laband in a very basic fashion.
Long before coal-fuelled ships and machine-tooled firearms, in the age of sail and black powder, the Portuguese were engaged all around the coasts of Africa in capturing trading towns, seizing slaves and searching for mineral riches. They fought their ancient Muslim foes wherever they encountered them, overthrew African kingdoms and resisted Dutch, Omani and Ottoman rivals.
Campaigning over difficult terrain and in notoriously inhospitable climates, these were far from one-sided contests. Often victory was theirs, but so too were crushing, ignominious defeats in the field, debilitating sieges and humiliating capitulations. These were clashes between very contrasting societies with their own methods of warfare, choice of weaponry and concepts of what it took to be a heroic warrior.
The enthralling tale of the Portuguese in Africa before the nineteenth century deserves to be every bit as familiar as the Spanish conquest of the Americas. Yet, surprisingly, English-speaking readers know few if any of their ferocious African wars. In this impeccably researched and spellbinding new book, John Leband seeks to redress this imbalance expertly recalling this remarkable saga in full for the first time.

Laband covers a lot of ground quickly but in sufficient depth to enlighten those interested in the subject. Highly recommended.

Bringers of War
I was looking into the Portuguese incursion into the Indian Ocean when I got a copy of Bringers of War. I struck gold, for my purpose. John Laband takes us from the first Portuguese attacks on the Swahili trading towns along the East coast of Africa to the late 19th century struggles in Angola.
He brings us along with him on this long journey with bright writing. He delivers us a huge load of information but it never seems forced or stilted, always interesting and accessible.
The subject matter helps because of the drama of course. But Laband writes of the wars and battles with just the right mix of detachment and vivid realism. The chapter on Ethiopia and the Portuguese experience there taught me more about that era than I had managed to accumulate in a long life of reading.
This work might just be the definitive volume on the subject, at least for the general reader. I enjoyed reading it and found it very valuable.

The Portuguese as a cancer in African history.
By lyndonbrecht
This is really a military history, and not particularly well written. It is full of information, and written with some passion. The book is a valuable read if you are interested in the Portuguese empire, because so few of the many books about it deal with Africa. The Portuguese were of course involved in Angola and Mozambique for centuries, but also in Morocco and, as allies, in Ethiopia.
The maps are reasonably good and the illustrations interesting. The coverage is best, I think, on Portuguese dabbling in Morocco (invading, slave raiding, only minor actual conquests) and the Angolan slave trade. The overall history chronicles brutality on both sides, but the Portuguese seem particularly savage. The many (mostly local and small) wars were as often Portuguese defeats as they were victories. African resistance was often fierce. Few histories pay much attention to African military competency.
Africans emerge in this book as fully realized characters, wily and militarily formidable. The overall picture of the Portuguese in this book is that they were a cancer on the continent, a malevolent force.
