Bert loves to teach the double bass and teaches private lessons at his home and at Bellarmine University.

This scale book is the first thing I open every morning when I start my daily practice. I'm returning to studying the bass in my sixties and I appreciate how this book is simple and straightforward. I use other books to study technique, but for getting warmed up, and doing my daily intonation work, there is nothing better than Bert Witzel's scales book.

A terrific guide which blends single positions and pivot practice. As a principal bass player, Bert has mastered the art of fingerings which support both a melodic solo voice, as well as fingerings which are more useful in orchestral playing. For instance, the bassist is encouraged to use fingering patterns such as 4 to 4, 4 to 2, 4 to 1, 2 to 4, 2 to 2 ....... whatever is possible it's in here. Furthermore, the book teaches the left hand to travel both horizontally and vertically. Lastly, if you're a string player then you need a scales regimen. If you don't have any regimen then get this book. If you do have a regimen, then get this book and improve upon the regimen that you do have. Of course it is your choice ... you could leave this book on the shelf and just keep playing out of tune if you'd like.

Tannen (You Just Don't Understand, Morrow, 1990) describes differences in men's and women's public communication as found within the business setting. These differences appear to influence actual perceptions of worker skills and abilities. For example, women say "I'm sorry" without actually apologizing and tend to use an indirect manner of speech. These styles make women appear less confident, competent, and professional. However, women who learn to speak like men are accused of being aggressive and unfeminine. Written for the general reader, Tannen's work is entertaining and filled with illustrative conversations. It raises many issues of concern to working women, from knocking against the glass ceiling to dealing with sexual harassment. Unfortunately, Tannen's research has not yet suggested any linguistic solutions. Highly recommended for general public and academic libraries.

Thought-provoking and helpful

This book makes me acutely conscious of the way I communicate with other people, both women and men (as did "You Just Don't Understand" when I read it several years ago). Without mandating a certain method of communication or telling us how we must change our ways of talking to one another, Tannen illustrates and defines patterns and gives us enough information to work it out for ourselves. I definitely recommend this book to any woman in the workplace who wants to be seen as confident and competent without being labled as the B word.

Important Work - A little too much personal bias though

I gave this a 4 star rating only because of the importance of the overall topic. This book really can help one understand some of the underlying issues that make communications difficult between men and women at work. Ritual opposition and ritual apology are two important topics that are often seen and important to understand. I do believe that the author engages in a small amount of "axe grinding" though. Although, you know what Dr. Tannen? If I were a woman perhaps I would have viewed some of your experiences through a different "lens".

Content is great... presentation lacking...

Dr. Tannen has written several books detailing the effect of gender upon conversational style. This book, specifically, offers insights specific to the work place. The author cites research to substantiate her claims, but she does not bore the reader with scientific paradigms -- she speaks in a language we all can understand. The biggest problem with the book is that it does not seem to flow. Her theories need to be better articulated through the book, and she needs to spend more time making sure that everything does not run together. If you have not read "You just don't understand," and you have a choice between the two books, pick that one. It will give the same information in a more organized way.

Really inspiring book!

Really enjoyed reading this book. Its good for dipping in and out of too. I especially liked that it shows how its not just a case of what food you eat that affects how healthy you are but also what is going on in your head, which I think is probably the trigger so much these days. The sections on mind, body and spirit are very insightful and give some really good and easy to follow ways of improving your state of mind and energy levels.

About the Author
Quinn Caldwell is minister at Plymouth Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Syracuse, NY. Caldwell is well-known in the wider United Church of Christ (UCC) as a member of the UCC Stillspeaking Writers’ Group and an author for the Stillspeaking Daily Devotionals. He is a former associate minister at Old South Church in Boston and since January has led the Under-40 Writers Group for the UCC website’s Feed Your Spirit section on the denomination’s global reach. Caldwell graduated from Cornell with a BS in natural resources in 1999, and received his master’s in divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 2003.

An Advent Companion for Progressive Christians

This is a remarkable new Advent companion with 2 page readings for each morning and evening from December 1st through January 6th--a small book that is realistic for the bedside table, the coffee table, or a cubicle desk.

But it's unlike any other Advent devotional I've seen. Written with humor, grace, and a generous, welcoming faith, this book names the goodness of the season in a faithful, but not syrupy/sentimental way. (When was the last time you read that an author thinks something is "as cheesy as a bag of Doritos"?)

Unlike so many other books for Advent, it's not about making a dutiful pilgrimage through the season's familiar Biblical texts--it's an attempt to name the familiar experiences and emotions of the Christmas season, and find God's mysterious presence there.

It also includes a week at a time calendar with concrete acts you might include in your day, including listening to particular music, cooking, reading online...even (gasp!) making love as a way to mark the season.

For Christians who can handle faith that isn't exclusively Rated G, who may or may not be part of a church but who look for a closer connection to Jesus and to God's love at Christmas. A great gift for that son or daughter who isn't into organized religion just now but still gets teary at "Amazing Grace."

Caldwell has a wonderfully new take on a very familiar idea--how to get more out of the Christmas season without adding more pointless stuff to it. Full of wit, charm, and downright hilarity, this book will take a spot next to the Muppet Christmas Carol and and a candle lit Silent Night as a trinity of musts for my holiday season. It can be tricky to find meaningful material that is sincere without being sappy and emotionally moving without being manipulative. All I Really Want nails it.

It's for the modern generation and isn't the old staid approach at all. It's vibrant and joyful. Above all, this is advent reading for you who might not usually seriously observe the season.

Akroyd has been removed by Yahweh. She has intentional leaving quotations off the work to make people believe she wrote it. She's no longer part of the holy family. Other things she was ousted, but this pertains the book she claimed to authored.

nothing christian about this book

In this age we are constantly fighting against the teachings of things that "itches the ears" (2 Tim 4:3-4). The Chosen is a book that claims to be christian yet a majority of its claims go directly against God's word. Diana Akroyd, the chosen has personal visits and additional revelations of truth from angels. I think she has been visited but not from angels of God. She totally discounts the possibility, and the warnings of many scriptures, that these visits could be from those pretending to be angels of light. The bible warns that even the elect will be deceived - what greater indication that one is a false teacher is that they say they are never wrong, just like Diana does. The main problem is that she will not take biblical correction or reproof (which the bible commands). She wont even discuss or dispute her "out of context" scripture usage. Diana states that its all real and her experiences are proof that everything is from God and therefore true. Unfortunately the bible says the heart is deceitfully wicked and not to be trusted. Anyway take a look at just some of the claims that Diana makes. I went over her website and there is just too much false teaching. They include...

1. Angels will kill people here on earth after the rapture = no biblical support

2. Claims there is no one Holy Ghost, but multiple holy ghosts = heresy

3. Claims that in the next 2 years the earth will be bankrupt = if this doesnt come to pass she is a false prophet

4. "We do not debate the Scriptures" = the bible says the opposite, be like the Bereans; besides the bible says its useful for correcting and reproof but the author chooses not to heed this command

5. Says she doesnt want to sell the book for money but she has no choice - YES YOU DO, PUT IT INTO PDF FORMATE AND GIVE IT AWAY!

6. Claims to have 70 spirit guides surrounding her at all times - no scripture says christians are to have spirit guides

7. Claims that she is a "Chosen" one to disseminate truth and that the "Messenger" only comes around every generation = there is no office, agent or duty like this seen in the bible (can you say FALSE TEACHING?)

8. her angel pictures look like they are made with KY Petroleum Jelly - i would make a recreation on my window but it would be a waste of good PJ and its hard to clean up.

The author says she was into Psychics, Astrology, Nostradomus, Palm Reading, Past Lives and Past Life Regression, Soul Mates, Star Seeds, Witchcraft, Tarot Cards, Tea Leafs, Numerology, The Bible Code, Buddhism, Wicca, Paganism, demonology and more, but its funny how there is no evidence of any gospel message that includes the sin, repentance, confession or believing in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Heck the author never says that she repented of any of her past actions in the occult even tho almost all of her experiences are denounced in the bible as witchcraft, divination and idolatry against God). The bible never says that personal experience trumps the doctrines and teachings found in the bible. Oh well I wish there was truth in advertising because this is not a Christian book at all.

My hopes are that you stick to God's word, examine yourself daily and search the scriptures like the Bereans in order to stay on the narrow path of salvation, and to help others that wander off on the road that leads to destruction. Remember last of all the bible says...

"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed."

Chosen: End Times Truths Revealed is an amazing book. In this book you will find behind the scene accounts on the Spiritual War that is being fought daily between good and evil forces. Ms. Akroyd explains in great depth what the Spiritual War is and what it means for us. Ms. Akroyd gives a clear and concise understanding of the Spirit Realm, Angels and Demons and the Spiritual War that is being fought both there and in the physical realm that cuts through all the myths and legends believed by so many people today. Scriptural references are also given throughout the book that ties everything together in one nice neat package and answers many questions that we've all had at one time or another in regards to our spirituality and mortality. Regardless of your religious beliefs or lack thereof, there is something for everyone in this book because it covers a wide variety of subjects and flows nicely as the author takes you through her personal journey of enlightenment.
