Nourishing Practitioners by Nourishing Destiny

Lonny Jarrett is one of the few authors who provides a complete analysis of the five elements that can be applied to everyday practice. I found as I read his book, which I did several times, various patients came to mind (others were not so clear...). Patients also related to the descriptions of the five elements as it affected their lives. The approach provided me with the extra information I needed to better treat an energy imbalance, rather than symptoms alone. The way Lonny combines the things we learn, the way we interpret the world, and the make up we bring to it, was practical and applicable. He seems to be more from the Worsley school with its emphasis on the psychological rather than the cosmological school. If more books like Lonny's come to print, I believe Western Chinese Medicine will really have come of age.

Superb, unusual, and thought-provoking

This book is genuinely eye-opening. It is an advanced text focusing on five-phase acupuncture models. It discusses various phase types, and also utilizes case studies to clarify his perspective. It is highly psycho-emotionally oriented, and therefore useful to add to the more standard library of acupuncturists. Along with Jeremy Ross' book, I use this book most frequently.

Good Information, Not for the Faint of Heart

Be aware that "Nourishing Destiny" is not any kind of "how-to" manual for the practice of TCM. It is a book about ideas at the foundation of TCM, their origins in chinese mythology and philosophy, and their application in healing practice. This is a book of theory, not a manual.

This book doesn't in any way pretend to be a light or escapist read, and that's good, because it's not. It's dense, richly packed with information and analysis you won't find in such a thorough package anywhere else. Or so I've been told by others who've done more reading on the topic of TCM than I have as yet.

If you want an entertaining, chatty discussion of TCM, this probably isn't your ticket to that. However, if you want a thorough grounding in this ancient way of seeing the world and Life, or if you're intending to practice any of the healing modalities that are based upon this tradition, then "Nourishing Destiny" is a supremely solid and intelligent approach to it.

I'm still working my way through this book, two months after I received it. Not my usual MO, I can tell you! The reason why is that I find myself nodding off every time I sit down to study it's pages. Not because I find it boring; if it were boring, I'd just stop reading it. No, it's so incredibly dense with esoteric, foreign concepts that I have to go into a kind of half-trance to partially comprehend a lot of it. This isn't a bad thing. My whole construct of reality is receiving a refreshing shift and expansion because of this exercise in peering at life through an "alien" worldview. It does tend to send me into Noddyland, though.

Very beautiful, wish it was longer

I'm absolutely in love with the artwork and usage of color in this book. It's a beautiful concept with a lot more lore than they had time to get into . This could easily have been an outstanding series with plenty to offer, so my only complaint is trying to fit so much of this big idea into such a short book. I'm noticing this has been a consistent problem with graphic novels for me. The level of detail you could get from a regular novel cannot be matched through images, which themselves offer a broader sense of imagery and allow for less descriptive detail. Anyway, back to the book, for what graphic novels typically seem to accomplish in my experience, this one did a good job and it was worth it, if not for the artwork alone.

Andrew MacLean is an outstanding artist and dynamic storyteller. ApocalyptiGirl is a must-read story with one of a kind art. If you enjoy artists who emphasize shape dynamics and utilize exciting color choices then this book is for you. The art alone makes this a great buy, and a price like this is hard to beat. Andrew will also be releasing a Trade Paperback edition of Head Lopper. If you enjoy this art style, check out Head Lopper and see it amped up even further.

Wonderful story. I really enjoy MacLean's Art. It's much different than what you see in main stream comics. The story line is very gripping and enjoyable and even takes an unexpected twist.

Holly Fernandez Lynch is the executive director of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. She is also the author of Conflicts of Conscience in Health Care: An Institutional Compromise.

I. Glenn Cohen is a professor at Harvard Law School and faculty director of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics. He is the author of more than eighty articles and book chapters and the author, editor, or coeditor of seven books. About the Author
Jacques S. Jaikaran was born in Guyana where only elementary education was free. In order to pay to go to high school, he became a plantation laborer even before his teen years. Following high school he bought a one-way ticket from South America to England. He won a scholarship to medical school, continuing his studies in the United States where he ultimately became a plastic surgeon. While serving on a board of directors of a Texas bank, Jaikaran began to study the monetary systems of the United States and other countries.

Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt

Frederick Soddy wrote a book in the 1920's with the same title as my review. Dr. Soddy was writing about the monetary system in England and he reached the same conclusions as Dr. Jaikaran. Dr. Soddy also won the Nobel Prize in Physics for work involving the discovery of Isotopes. Dr Soddy was clearly a very bright man, but after reading his book I must tell you he was obviously better with numbers and physics than he was with the English language.
Jacques Jaikaran, on the other hand, can write. Dr. Jaikaran and Dr. Soddy reached identical conclusions about money and the way it works in our society, but after reading "Debt Virus" you'll have a clearer, more understandable picture than you will after wading through "Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt."
This is an important book that anyone who earns, saves, invests or uses "money" (obviously I mean everyone) ought to read.
I interviewed Dr. Jaikaran for a radio show I once hosted and have heard him speak back in 1995. He taught me more about money than I had previously learned in four years as an undergraduate, three years in law school and twenty five years of business. And, he did so in an engaging, easy to understand manner.
Dr. Jaikaran (he's a medical doctor by the way) learned about money, after becoming a successful surgeon, when he was invited to join a bank board. Being a responsible person, he actually read the materials he was given by the bank, the FDIC, the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve. Then after he resigned from the bank board and after the bank later failed, he translated all of that into English you and I can understand.
Dr. Jaikaran has made a compelling case that our civilization is piling up too much debt, causing debt inflation and creating dangerous monetary conditions. He also provides intriguing information about who owns the Federal Reserve (it's not who you think), how banking really works, the history of money, where our money comes, what banking systems might offer safer alternative systems from and other important facts. By the way, he's not a "gold bug" arguing for a return to the gold standard.
But, does any of this really matter to regular people like us? Well, if you paid attention to current events over the past five years, you will have noticed a series of currency crises in Thiland, Russia and Argentina. Those people we watched on television mobing banks, trying to get their money out of Argentina while it was still worth something and worried about the economic survival of their families, could easily have been you and me. Their system is basically the same as ours.
Dr. Jaikaran is a very bright, forthright and opinionated man with strong views on a variety of subjects. You may disagree with him about somethings, I do; however, I've not been able to find fault with his facts, logic or conclusions when it comes to money and debt.
If Dr. Jaikaran and Frederick Soddy are right about money and debt, and I think they are, then our monetary system is in grave danger.
I feel strongly enough about this that I've given this book to at least half a dozen people and suggested it to dozens of others. I would have given more away if I could find people willing to think about money, fractional reserve banking and debt.

This book should be required reading. It is written so anyone can understand. There are things in this book that everyone should know. I believe we could change the world's debt problems not just USA's. Anyone who has anything to to with running a country needs this information.

Incredible Reading

This is one of the most thought- provoking and scary books I have ever read. Clearly solutions must be found to the incredible build up of world debt to avoid world crisis. Dr. Jaikaran has a solution that sounds plausible and I recommend that everyone tell those in power about this book. You will not be able to put it down!

Excellent book!

The book was clear, easy to understand. I had to teach myself this program, so I could submit a project for my graphic design course. I followed the lessons in here step by step. There so many assignments that reinforce material learned through the tutorials, so you really get it down! Not do it once and forget it. The book was worth the money I spent on Amazon, as I learned so much.

Authentic & real, a good buy for sure!

"Rasa Malaysia" means to taste Malaysia.

A small country of 329,847 sq.kilometres (127,350 sq.miles), smaller then most US states, bordering Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei, we have a cuisine is as diverse as our people (Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan, Eurasian & still more). Maybe the birth-place of fusion, not this newfangled fusion craze but a fusion evolved when different cultures and people live together for hundreds of years; nothing experimental - it is mature, full of depth, complexity and harmony.

Visitors swoon over our sambal (chilli based sauce), satay (meat on skewers), beef rendang (cooked slow & long in coconut cream, till tender & fragrant) without realising these dishes are prepared differently in different parts of Malaysia.

As celebration of diversity, Rasa Malaysia lays out recipes according to the states they come from. A good selection of traditional Malaysian dishes influenced by the aromatics of Indonesia, the stir-fries of China, spices of India, with sweet & sour from Thailand and the lingering tastes of England, Holland and Portugal - what a melting pot.

Betty Saw is as Malaysian as her book. A chef who knows her food, her country and her people; a prolific food historian, she encourages, records and preserves Malaysian food tradition.

Asian groceries abound, correct ingredients are no longer as difficult to source. My only suggestion would be - whenever coconut cream is called for (where canned coconut milk might suffice); do try your very best to find or squeeze your own from freshly grated coconut, for a slice of heaven.

Criticism? Only one, I wish Betty Saw had shared more of her thoughts on the wonderful recipes she's collected in her book.

Exciting history

This is one of the best stories narrated under graphic classics. It is also the first time that I had heard of Molly Pitcher. the story of how this woman takes part during the Revolutionary War by shooting her husband's cannon herself, is absolutly stunning. Her courage thrilled me. It is the kind of story that keeps children interested in history. I highly recommend it to young readers.

Daughter liked the book, but age range of 8-14 seems too broad. She is an average student/reader who loves graphic novels and wanted this to satisfy her requirement for a biography book report. It took her about 5 minutes to read. We'd hoped for something a little more substantial. To be fair, I should have noticed the # of pages in the description for a better indication of the content/level.

I enjoyed the book, stories were relatable and fun and the characters kept you engaged, its forgettable though, the kind of story you forget about soon as you reach the last page, a fun light read that will keep you entertained on a slow day.

I liked the story line. I would have liked to read about Nomkhosi's parents when they hear about the pregnancy and the man responsible for it. I think it was going to be nice to be certain if Zaza's husband really knew about her promiscuous ways and still forgave her

Zaza, Nandi, Tumi and Princess are best friends living in the bustling city of Johannesburg. They are all juggling busy careers and complicated love lives. Zaza is trying to break it off with her lover while making sure her husband never finds out about the affair and Nandi is figuring out how she feels about the unexpected return of her ex-fiance while planning a wedding with her current fiance. Tumi is struggling to conceive a child with her husband when his much younger lover pitches up on her doorstep to reveal a secret pregnancy and Princess is madly in love with her charismatic artist boyfriend who is beginning to behave suspiciously.

I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did as I am wary of anything labeled 'chick lit' but I was pleasantly surprised. This book is a celebration of sisterhood and positive female friendships. It's a respite from the negative narrative of female relationships we see in reality television shows. It is also a candid look at romantic love which contrary to what usual 'chick lit' will tell you is not always romantic. People love each other, stay together or break-up and behave the way they do in romantic relationships for a multitude of reasons. Jele explores all the different sides of love without judging any of her characters for the choices they make. This is a great book for you if you are looking for an easy and enjoyable read with characters you can relate to or at least recognise.

About the Author
Leonard Susskind has been the Felix Bloch Professor in theoretical physics at Stanford University since 1978. The author of The Cosmic Landscape, he is a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of numerous prizes including the science writing prize of the American Institute of Physics for his Scientific American article on black holes. He lives in Palo Alto, California.

A popularisation that mostly works

Susskind describes the decades-long battle between the quantum mechanics community and the general relativists as to whether information is lost when objects pass through the event horizon of a black hole and the hole eventually evaporates. According to Prof. Hawking and the GR community, as nothing can ever reappear from inside an event horizon, the information is indeed totally lost.

Susskind and Gerard 't Hooft begged to differ. Loss of information would violate the basic time-reversibility of QM: Hawking's ideas would lead to universe-destroying phenomena (p. 23). Somehow, the information locked the wrong side of the event horizon must leak out via Hawking radiation. But how?

The resolution of this dilemma took many years of conjectures and refutations. Susskind takes us on a tour of entropy, holographic principles and physics at the Planck scale. And the adversarial plot keeps the reader turning the pages.

I am normally very dubious about popularisations. They proceed by raking up endless analogies which never quite fit together, so that by the end of the book, your mind is like that jig-saw puzzle you bought and could never fit together.

This book was never going to be the exception - the mathematics of quantum field theory, general relativity and string theory are just too arcane for popular culture concepts to cohere around. However, there are wonderful insights all the way through this book and we do end up learning something about the large scale map of the territory. Apparently even the experts find it hard to get the whole thing into one focus.

Susskind shines !!

This is absolutely the greatest example of what popular science book about theoretical physics/cosmology should be !! Writing is so brilliant, witty, straightforward, direct and succinct, that regardless of education level, anybody can enjoy interesting content (history of science as well as author's personal story) of "The Black Hole War". Author uses analogies in the best possible way, comparable only to Brian Greene and Michio Kaku. Drawings are frequent, well selected, informative and easy to understand. He writes: "The real tools for understanding the quantum universe are abstract mathematics: infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, projection operators, unitary matrices and a lot of other advanced principles that take a few years to learn. But let's see how we do in just a few pages". AND HE DELIVERES !! While this book could be a starter for anybody, I recommend it to all who know Kip Thorne's famous work. For reason unknown to me, important black hole "war" is not mentioned in "Black Holes & Time Warps" at all, therefore Susskind's work becomes great extension to BH history of science. Professor Susskind created a true masterpiece where he even acknowledges coexistence of science and faith by writing: "The British intellectual world seems to be big enough for both Dawkins and Polkinghorne". Nothing but big applaud for the author and his effort !!

Liked it, didn't love it

I find the material covered by Leonard Susskind in The Black Hole War intrinsically interesting, and Mr. Susskind does a creditable job of laying it out. The problem with this book is not the subject matter, but rather the writing and, even more so, the editing. The editor should have reigned in Mr. Susskind's penchant for rambling, tangential explanations. Covering this material without mathematics is a daunting task, and Mr. Susskind gives it a reasonable shot. But I was often left with the feeling that I should have had a better understanding than I did. For instance, his treatment of "horizon atoms" left me scratching my head.

One other aspect bothered me, and that was the overly blunt assessment of Stephen Hawking's current cognitive abilities. It was speculative and not particularly nice. A scientist search for truth needs to be bounded by a respect for the personal (as opposed to professional) privacy of living fellow scientists.

Finally, the whole premise of a "war" is really labored. Scientific theories change over time as new facts arrive. War is something else. The Catholic Church went to war against Galileo. Mr. Susskind participated in a, at-best, spirited debate.
