Education is the most important quality in Jeff's life, both and a teacher and a student. He surrounds himself with those smarter than myself to learn as much as possible. His experience teaching has greatly helped his communication skills with less technical people and is incredibly rewarding as well.
Outside of work, Jeff is a teacher at General Assembly Los Angeles and Lead Organizer for the LA Code for America brigade. Through teaching and civic hacking, he hopes to help others solve problems both in business and civic hacking.

Excellent introduction to MEAN stack and its best practices

This is an excellent introduction to MEAN stack. It actually offers more than just introduction to all technologies in MEAN. It gives solid advise on best practices for writing MEAN apps. What I loved most about this book was it builds a sample social networking app bit by bit rather than trying to put together every individual piece at once. It starts by creating a static page then powers it by AngularJS. It then introduces building REST API end points using expressjs and nodejs separately. Later on it introduces integrating REST API end points with AngularJS page. What I loved about this book is that it implements app features with simple approach first and then follows up by describing best practice of implementing it. This allows reader to understand the concept first and understand the reasoning behind certain the best practice.

Good book on modern web development tools

This is a good book that will guide newcomers to the MEAN stack on how to develop web apps using node.js, angularjs, mongodb and the express.js framework. However, it has been hastily written and it shows in the book in that code needed to make the sample app work is simply missing and key points are not treated thoroughly.
The book uses a twitter-like social networking app as a sample app. The app is developed step by step and every step is clearly explained. Besides node, angularjs, mongodb and express, the book covers the key aspect of developing an app including automating tasks with Gulp, writing tests and deploying the app. This is the key for me. I wanted a book that explains app development in steps that a pro would take. I had previously read Michael Hartl's Ruby on Rails Tutorial which does the same for the Rails web framework. It is really the best way to get a complete picture of a language and the relevant frameworks and tools and how best to use them effectively. Things like testing or automating javascript minification and other tasks would be easy to overlook and learning these practices could take quite a lot of time. I have been very pleased to see that the book fulfills these expectations. The author's experience in web development shows throughout the book.
Unfortunately, I must say some things in the code seem to have been skipped over. This makes the book hard to follow in particular for those with limited experience in coding and web development. For example, the sample code includes loging in but not registering a new user. Also, the book doesn't explain how to keep a user logged in if you refresh the browser. That sort of things are missing and some topics are skimmed fast so some research on your own is required to fully understand the discussed topics. One such topic was load balancing. I found that brief chapter to be hastily written. That particular chapter is not an essential one, though.
All in all, the book is recommendable for someone with prior experience in coding but who is new to the MEAN stack but be prepared to do some research and tinkering to get the app to work. The author has the code on GitHub, which greatly aids in getting things to work.
This book would have been five stars and highly recommendable were it not for the ommissions and a certain lack of detail in the explanations of concepts and code. Seeing how the various components come together and getting an idea as to what tools to use and what to learn more about elsewhere is still valuable.

This book is good as far as a step-by-step technical book is concerned

This book is good as far as a step-by-step technical book is concerned. It is a “doing” book, so it is best to follow along and actually write and run the code. There are code samples for creating a sample application and others for testing the application, as well as instructions on what needs to be installed. Technology might be moving fast, but actually writing and executing the code that “does something” works wonders for your knowledge of the technology. The only I’ll say is that the book needs some editor’s touch.
