This truly is an interactive book, one that will encourage research and writing skills in any young (or old) bug lover. It has lots of facts and lots of room for many more. I don't know for what age the book was intended (I bought it for a third grader) but it's a great introduction to scientific research and writing for younger kids or a perfect refresher for older students who'll love the subject matter to hone their own research and writing skills. Professor Slug face is a great character to introduce scientific research and journaling in an easy and fun format. Book has fun facts and great pictures. This book would be a fantastic addition to any classroom or child's personal collection. I could see it being used to help earn scouting badges too! Can't wait for the next addition!! “It hooked me at the first page!” “Ripped from the headlines!” “I couldn’t put it down!”
Hey wait a minute. Isn’t this supposed to be a review of an economics book? It is, and for me all those exclamations are true. In spite of the fact that I usually think economics is opaque and boring, I found this book to be positively riveting.

Like a lot of people, I’m worried about what’s going on in today’s world. The Arab Spring never bloomed; Occupy Wall Street petered out; the upcoming US election seems mired in chaos. We’re supposed to have recovered from the 2008 recession, but most new jobs can’t pay the bills. Every year breaks a record for world’s hottest, but certain political and corporate leaders still deny the existence of man-made climate change. Our population is getting older, poorer, and deeper in debt. What to do about the rising number of immigrants threatens many nations. So when Diane Rehm interviewed Paul Mason about his book, I decided to buy it. I wanted to hear more about his take on why we’re in this situation and what we can do about it.

Mason begins by reviewing humankind’s turbulent economic history: feudalism, industrial capitalism, the rise and destruction of the labor movement, the booms and busts of neoliberalism, the phenomenon of today’s “precariat.” These are the stressed-out people forced to work two jobs, who have lost or will never get a pension, who are acutely aware of how monopolies, outsourcing, or their company moving overseas make his or her job extremely precarious. Many workers are expected to be “at work” on their smartphones even when traveling or at home, and—even worse—are forced to “live the dream of the firm they work for.” In spite of our rising productivity, it’s now clear that actual wages are in decline, except for the 1%.

Mason then takes a look at how capitalism evolved in the last 200 years. It was mind-expanding for me to see how economic systems evolve and change just like human beings do. Today’s capitalism, the author points out, is in its fifth great wave. It’s trembling on the edge of becoming something new: postcapitalism.

Why is this happening? The answer, basically, is because our planet has to meet several great challenges it never faced before: climate change, ageing, the information network, and massive immigration. Business as usual won’t be able to meet these challenges.

So what will? What does this new mutation of capitalism look like? Mason says we’re already seeing it through models like the non-profit Wikipedia, Creative Commons, and Open Source. These share a communal nature, “free to use, but impossible to grab, own, and exploit.” Because of the unprecedented availability of free information on the internet, people are able to form artisanal local businesses, publish e-books, join global communities, share videos, get the equivalent of a free college degree. Information, one of the most valuable commodities available to human beings, isn’t scare anymore, but free to all.

Like any great novel, this book builds and builds into an explosive climax. Using the nitty-gritty facts of history and economics, Mason reveals what postcapitalism can mean to us and our future.

There’s tons more in in this book that I can’t even begin to deal with here. Whenever I read a book I think I’m going to review, I jot down notes: what grabs me, what new thing I learn, how it coincides with what I’ve noticed in the world and why it bothers me or gives me hope. For this book, I took six pages of notes. It’s hard to review a book in which you struggle to assimilate a new idea when, on the next page, the author is already using the new idea as the foundation for yet another new idea.

This book isn’t an easy read, but boy is it an exhilarating ride! At the end—when we finally get the answer to the question “who’s going to save us?”—I actually yelled Yay!

Serious Analysis and Insights about the Transition from Capitalism

I will leave it to others who are more invested in seriously reviewing books to provide a summary and commentary of this work. I really enjoyed reading this book, but believe the title is a bit misleading. The substance of the book is about where we find ourselves now and how we got to this point; less about some future that is still largely unknowable. Mason's analysis and insights are what make this book amazing, and he has a gift for clearly explaining some pretty complicated issues (without dumbing anything down). The last chapter of the book is much less successful, which I kind of expected, given that nobody can really have their arms around a collective future that is contingent on so many significant variables. This is definitely worth your time to read, and I feel like I need to re-read this book in a couple of months to pick up what I missed on the first round.

Simply amazing how the author ties together cutting edge economic theory on technology with political thinking. This is not a book to be missed for modern thinkers. There might be many automatically critical of this work on an ideological level but I would implore you to put your politics aside, get it and read. The ideas in this book correspond to many of those found in Martin Ford's Book Rise of the Robot's as well as the work by MIT economists called The Second Machine Age. Specifically, one should pay attention to whether "information goods conflict fundamentally with market mechanism." I believe Mason is correct in asserting that they do.

Lifechanging!

This book made me realize that I have the power within me to heal body and soul. I used to have a lot of fear according to cancer and other diseases, and this book helped me to handle the fear by understanding the natural process of a physical disease. The author Susanne Billander is awake, and she is highly competent and explain this "big subject" in a very simple way.

On the virtues of local histories

The "Dutch Flat Chronicles" is a large, handsome, coffee table-worthy book, and a real gift of intelligence we might not otherwise have if it weren't for archiving by libraries of local newspaper articles and stories, and in this case, the interest and diligence of Russell Towle to collect and present these stories of the Gold Rush era mining town, Dutch Flat, California, in which he lived. These verbatim accounts cover fifty years of bare-knuckle striving and building, not only by get-rich-quick gold seekers, but also the organization, energy, and physical effort it took to build a transcontinental railroad and highway over the Sierran summit. In the Dutch Flat of today, where the wagon trails crossed, traces still remain.

Aside from being so much fun to read, another virtue of this book is the measure it gives the reader of how difficult it is to translate the realities of those days (hardships) with those of today (loud fast rules), and by extrapolation how unimaginably mystifying our clamorous 'present' will be to those intentionally looking back from one hundred years hence. In style it has both truth and charm, thanks to the liveliness of the writers of the time. Russ Towle has written an introduction to give the reader a broader picture of the terrain as well - from the long view of its geologic history, including how gold is formed in the first place, to a comprehensive description of the flora and fauna of the American River watershed. This gives us present-day readers the perspective of what qualities of life, over time, whether looking backward or forward, actually pretty much stay the same. It's been left to the reader to decide where the comparisons lie.

Bence Nanay is Professor of Philosophy and BOF Research Professor at the University of Antwerp, where he is also co-director of the Centre for Philosophical Psychology and Senior Research Associate at Peterhouse, Cambridge University. He is the author of Between Perception and Action (OUP, 2013) and the editor of Perceiving the World (OUP, 2010) and of Current Controversies in Philosophy of Perception (Routledge, forthcoming). He has published more than 90 articles on various topics mainly in philosophy of mind and in aesthetics. He used to work as a film critic and served on the jury of various major international film festivals.

In 1947, the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand signed a secret treaty in which they agreed to cooperate in matters of signals intelligence. In effect, the governments agreed to pool their geographic and technological assets in order to listen in on the electronic communications of China, the Soviet Union, and other Cold War bad guys--all in the interest of truth, justice, and the American Way, naturally. The thing is, the system apparently catches everything. Government security services, led by the U.S. National Security Agency, screen a large part (and perhaps all) of the voice and data traffic that flows over the global communications network. Fifty years later, the European Union is investigating possible violations of its citizens' privacy rights by the NSA, and the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a public advocacy group, has filed suit against the NSA, alleging that the organization has illegally spied on U.S. citizens.

Being a super-secret spy agency and all, it's tough to get a handle on what's really going on at the NSA. However, James Bamford has done great work in documenting the agency's origins and Cold War exploits in The Puzzle Palace. Beginning with the earliest days of cryptography (code-making and code-breaking are large parts of the NSA's mission), Bamford explains how the agency's predecessors helped win World War II by breaking the German Enigma machine and defeating the Japanese Purple cipher. He also documents signals intelligence technology, ranging from the usual collection of spy satellites to a great big antenna in the West Virginia woods that listened to radio signals as they bounced back from the surface of the moon.

Bamford backs his serious historical and technical material (this is a carefully researched work of nonfiction) with warnings about how easily the NSA's technology could work against the democracies of the world. Bamford quotes U.S. Senator Frank Church: "If this government ever became a tyranny ... the technological capacity that the intelligence community has given the government could enable it to impose total tyranny, and there would be no way to fight back, because the most careful effort to combine together in resistance to the government ... is within the reach of the government to know." James Bamford's The Puzzle Palace was a national bestseller when it was first published and now regarded as a classic. It Makes One Wonder

It's hard to take a fresh look at a book that has already been so well reviewed, but I feel that I do have a few more worthwhile comments, hence another review.
Even though PUZZLE PALACE has been around for eighteen years, it still seems to be the best researched book on NSA that's available. It would be nice if Bamford could update us on what has happened in those intervening years.
None of the following is classified information. I was an enlisted man in the Army Security Agency, stationed in the Philippines, from 1955 to 1957. I had been trained as a French Linguist at the Army Language School. It wasn't until I got to the Philippines that I even knew that there was an organization known as the National Security Agency (NSA). Even more amazing is the fact that, until I read Bamford's book, I had no idea how what I was doing fit into the scheme of things. Thanks, James Bamford, for clearing that up for me some forty five years later. Better late than never, they say.
What I think that Bamford has done so well is to tell the true story of the creation of a modern "Frankenstein's Monster." He presents a cogent case for the very real need for communication interception and code breaking in the early days of NSA's existence. He proceeds to take us through, step by step, the process whereby a protector of our freedoms seems to have evolved into a threat to those very freedoms.
According to Bamford, the communications security community seems almost paranoid in their fears that "unless we absolutely control it, it's dangerous." They are devious enough to get around any and every safeguard to the privacy of the individuual that might be established. To wit: Jimmy Carter, when he was President, put a few safeguards in place. With time on their side, the NSA waited until Ronald Reagan was President and got him to remove those safeguards. (See page 374 of the 1982 hardback edition.)
It makes one wonder: In today's world of e-mail, high speed faxes, cel phones, etc., all using the air waves, is anything sacred or has Orwell's prediction come true. As I mentioned above, I'd really like for Bamford to bring us up to date.
A few reviewers have complained about problems keeping up with all the initials used in PUZZLE PALACE. One has to understand that no discussion of the magnitude of the situation can be held without mentioning all of the organizations and committees involved.
It is true that a bit of hard work on the part of the reader is necessary to get all, or most, of the impact of the information contained in PUZZLE PALACE, but I think that the knowledge gained is definitely worth the effort.

What's Bamford going to say next?

When "The Puzzle Palace" first came out in 1982, it caused a certain amount of controversy and angst. Bamford now has a new book on NSA scheduled to appear this Spring. I wonder what it will contain? "The Puzzle Palace" was quite a good job of investigative reporting, especially considering the customary reluctance of NSA to reveal much about itself. I found "The Puzzle Palace" an interesting read, and I learned much from it that I had not learned during my 20 years of previous occasional contact with NSA. The book is not friendly to NSA, but neither is it muckraking.
In the 1980s I wished that "The Puzzle Palace" had not been written; it seemed to me to contain considerable material that would have best been left unpublished (and would have been if the United States had anything like the British Official Secrets Act.) Looking back from the vantage point of 2001, I note only one brief item in "The Puzzle Palace" that I know harmed the United States, and in that case the harm was minor. (Furthermore, Bamford got that item from a senior NSA official, and may not have know that it was sensitive.) And I note several places where Bamford must have known certain things he chose to omit from "The Puzzle Palace" that might indeed have imperiled some aspect of national security, even though they were not, are not, and never have been classified. So, overall, I consider that Bamford walked the tightrope quite well in "The Puzzle Palace."
It will be interesting not only to read his new book when it comes out, but also to compare the new book with "The Puzzle Palace." I intend to keep them side by side on my bookshelf.

Best book on SIGINT, best use of open sources

The book is nothing short of sensational, for two reasons: itis the first and still the only really comprehensive look at globalsignals intelligence operations as dominated by the National Security Agency; and second, because all of his research was done using only open sources, including unclassified employee newsletters at Alice Springs, and he did a great job of making the most out of legally and ethically available information. James is still around, working on another book about SIGINT, and I believe that only he will be able to top this one.

About the Author

NESIMI ERTUGRUL is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide, where he specializes in the development of interactive computer-based teaching/learning systems involving object-oriented programming and data acquisition. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. Dr. Ertugrul is a Member of IEEE and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for the International Journal of Engineering Education (IJEE). He coordinated and edited two special issues on LabVIEW Applications in Engineering Education, and on Remote Access and Distance Learning Laboratories for IJEE.

My strong belief is that education will have maximum value if knowledge and experience advance simultaneously regardless of quantity and complexity. This is the aim of LabVIEW for Electric Circuits, Machines, Drives, and Laboratories.

The groundwork for this book began about seven years ago, after I purchased my first copy of LabVIEW (Version 3.0) and a data acquisition card. Since then I have obtained more software and hardware components and integrated my teaching and research activities into LabVIEW-based modules, which have diverse areas of application varying from simple simulation and data acquisition to complex Motion Control. This book is a result of these studies. I now see LabVIEW as a verb as well as a noun, and many students who have utilized the end products say that they have improved their understanding of electrical circuits, machines, and drives.

It is a widely accepted fact that ac circuits, electrical machines, and drives are the most difficult subjects to teach and learn without some visual aids. Moreover, because in many institutions the time available for courses on electrical circuits, machines, and laboratories is severely limited, using custom-written virtual instruments (VIs) may conserve time by providing self-study tools and adding an extra dimension and visualization.

A first in its field, this book provides complete solutions for laboratory implementations and exposes the reader to manifold phenomena taking place in various electrical systems. It is an introduction to computer simulation of dc and ac electric circuits, electromechanical devices, and electric motors and drive systems and laboratory practices, all of which utilize VIs that are provided on the accompanying CD-ROM. The CD-ROM also contains a copy of an evaluation version of LabVIEW 6.0.

LabVIEW for Electric Circuits reinforces theoretical concepts and gives practical programming advice through examples of computer simulation in action and complete codes, which can also be utilized by potential developers. Furthermore, the book aims to fulfill the essential need for LabVIEW programming in this long-ignored area of electrical engineering--with hardware information, wiring diagrams, practical circuits, and printed circuit layouts all provided in the Appendix.

It should be emphasized here that discussion of the details of LabVIEW programming is beyond the scope of this book. Instead, basic or more complex theory of selected subjects is transformed in ways that learners and educators perceive to be useful and effective, utilizing a number of custom-written VIs. The book effectively employs a theoretical, a real-time, and a multidisciplinary approach to give readers a broader understanding of each topic, and it provides open-ended and highly interactive VIs that can be studied using computers.

While not intended as a detailed manual, LabVIEW for Electric Circuits provides sufficient basic knowledge to study the VI modules with a minimum background in LabVIEW. I have endeavored to make the front panels of the virtual instruments as simple and as close as possible to real-world operation. Furthermore, a considerable amount of time and effort was spent in developing cost-effective, high-performance hardware, details of which are all provided in the Appendix.

Each subsection is dedicated to a particular concept in an electric circuit and is accompanied by a VI. At the end of most subsections, a set of self-study questions is structured to introduce study guidelines and trigger further reflection. I provide a balanced coverage of fundamental definitions, various dc and ac electrical circuits, and magnetic circuits with animated operating modes of the circuits.

A considerable part of the book is necessarily devoted to laboratory experiments utilizing custom-written VIs, as the experimental modules are developed and currently used by the students at Adelaide University. Special attention is devoted to power electronics circuits involving basic converter topologies and to system simulations, which are related to earlier and successive chapters.

A number of dynamic motor and drive simulations are also provided. The essential principles of such systems, which underlie the performance of electrical machines and their applications, are discussed.

Using computer simulations without encountering the real devices is an incomplete experience since it will be only a toy (data), not a tool (information). Therefore, the book concludes with a number of real-time experimental modules that are intended to help students gain real-life experience.

The chapter topics cover a wide spectrum of areas in electric circuits, machines, and laboratory work. The chapters are organized to briefly introduce the fundamental theory and to provide alternative self-study tools (VIs). Note that the complexity of the topics gradually increases in successive chapters.

The CD-ROM that accompanies the book provides a wealth of supplements. The VIs supplied with the book form a veritable Virtual Electrical Circuits, Machines, and Drives Laboratory. Use of the VIs is mandatory for understanding the concepts covered in each study module. LabVIEW for Electric Circuits may well become a formidable partner for self-study and an enduring teaching assistant.

The intention of this book is to provide correct information and error-free virtual instruments. Considerable effort has been spent on testing every VI, yet you may still find an error.
