This book begins by introducing an algebra for forces and motions which greatly simplifies discussion of dynamics. It proceeds to comprehensively review algorithms for calculating rigid body dynamics with effective and easy to understand mathematics and pseudo-code. The book improves on Featherstone's previous work in its algebra, and its addressing of closed loop systems. As a graduate student and robotics researcher I highly recommend this book for those interested in control and simulation design.

Innovative but rather poorly presented

I'm a third year undergraduate mechanical engineering student and I bought this book as my supervisor sugested that I try to implement the concept of 6D spatial vectors into my research project. The book starts out fine, the ideas are sound but I'm having a rather hard time trying to make sense of it due to there being very little use of practical examples in the book and the examples that are in the book are not that well explained; I suspect engineering mathematics students might be able to benefit more from the book but as a mechanical student I find that I'm going to need a lot of assistance to understand the presented material.

Terrific Resource!

My team and I recently discovered "Reading Poetry in the Middle Grades" by Paul Janeczko, and we have each purchased our own copy. This is a terrific resource for the busy classroom teacher who is searching for material that can be covered in a few classroom lessons, unlike a novel. Janeczko has organized this book into several very useful formats. He has organized the lessons and activities by the Common Core Standards for Reading Literature, where the teacher can choose the Standards key idea and find paired texts that give students practice with the specific standard. Janeczko has also organized all of the poems into a table of literary elements and devices. You can quickly scan for poems to help develop a particular skill. The lesson plans are extremely well-thought out, leading both the teacher and the students to a deep understanding of literature.

Great book for teaching poetry!

I teach 5th grade and wanted a resource for teaching poetry with the new CCS in mind. This book not only is aligned to the CCS, but it also has excellent strategies for teaching each and every poem within it's covers. It has a great variety of poems included. I highly recommend this book.

Must have for Common Core

I fell in love with the pages I was able to view online and I now love this entire book. The poems are high quality poetry. If we are teaching kids, shouldn't we want to expose them to 'good' poetry/literature whenever possible? I think so. The matrix was a great resource to finding what poems could be used to teach which standards. The graphic organizers set students for success. I am excited to use this book in my classroom this year!

Not practical for abuse survivors.

The information was good in regards to dealing with normal, flawed, not intentionally malicious people. However, if you have ever gone through any sort of traumatic psychological abuse, be warned. This book helps you identify unsafe behavior in others but at the end it tells you to be "long suffering" and always work on difficult relationships. This is just simply impractical for anyone who has been tortured by cruel people. God doesn't want to punish you. Take care of yourself.

Wonderful Insights - A little Heavy on the God-talk

These are the authors that wrote one of THE defining books on boundaries and setting limits in relationships. They also both hold PhDs, AND are strongly entrenched in American Christian life philosophies.

If you, also, are strongly entrenched in American Christian lifestyle, this would be an excellent read for you. If you are are NOT, especially if you still carry trauma from being involved in this lifestyle previously (*raises hand*) you may have to tiptoe through the God-talk in order to avoid triggering issues.

Even with that caveat, this books has many, many excellent nuggets and insights in it. Here are some bits that resonated with me: "Unsafe people only apologize instead of changing their behavior." Or the concept of "merger wishes" relationships: "When someone else possesses a trait that we don't have, we are inclined to blur our identity with with theirs in order to help us feel better about ourselves and to gain access to that trait." Or the tendency, when our boundaries are weak, to go for all or nothing: "...boundaryless people tend to isolate as their only limit. Often, people with weak boundaries will give in repeatedly to some irresponsible or demanding person. Then, out of the blue, they'll pack up and leave the relationship with no warning."

We DON'T have to be with unsafe people; nor can nor should we, trust our church or social club to screen people for us. That was my biggest take-away from this book, recognizing my own tendency/wish to think that in XYZ group, everyone is "safe" for me. Just ain't so. Because of MY life experiences, traits, and personality, Person A may be unsafe for me, but absolutely safe for YOU, and vice versa. As adults, we each need to figure out how to sort out and separate those who are safe and unsafe for us, PERSONALLY. We can't count on others to do it for us, anymore than we can count on others to exercise for us.

Some of the traits of safe people, according to this book, include: "Someone who gives me an opportunity to grow; someone I can be myself around; Someone who allows me to be on the outside what I am on the indie; someone whose life touches mine and leaves me better for it," and much more.

I do highly recommend this book, and am only deducting a star because of the triggering issues it may present to some readers.

Surprisingly life changing...and I'm not religious.

For anyone who is perfectly self-sufficient alone and thinks they are "just fine" this book looks more closely at that state of being, the places you have been that have gotten you where you are and the places you can go if you are open. The best part of the book starts on pg 122 and continues through the chapters that offer real solutions (ZOndervan edition). I am not particularly religious but the biblical references did not keep me from the powerful insights the authors put forth. Highly recommend. (Though not religious, am deeply spiritual)

Powerfully Moving Novel

This is a beautifully written novel about a most unlikely duo -- a 72 year old man with Alzheimer's and a 13 1/2 year old boy. This is the story of their travel, and the bond of their friendship, respect and love for one another.

I don't remember the last book I read that impacted me as much as 'Taking Flight'and I am a voracious reader. I could not put this one down! It is one of those novels that you are not likely to forget, crossing all generational boundaries. I promise it will 'stay with you', haunting, disquieting and renewing.

It is hard to imagine that this is the first novel from this wonderful author. Where have you been all this time Mr. Magnuson?? I look forward to more of his writings. Do not miss this book!!

Taking Flight

This is a beautifully written book about two unlikely partners in crime who come to understand each other, their differences, and ultimately find themselves along the way. A book that combines humor, adventure, and deeply touches your soul. This book will give you a new perspective on relationships and appreciating the lessons to be learned in unexpected situations.

Mr. Magnuson, I'm waiting for more!

A chance meeting on an airplane leads to a powerful connection between Harry, slowly losing himself to Alzheimer's disease, and Jay, caught in the chaos of his parents' disintegrating marriage and his mother's mental illness. Both Harry and Jay are running away from their troubles, and when they decide to run together they very quickly form a strong and lasting bond that has a profound effect on them both.

I liked the fact that the author didn't hurry me along to the end of the book, but led me leisurely through the lives of these wonderful characters. I smiled a lot, laughed out loud a few times, and shed tears at the end. This is a wonderful book and I heartily recommend it.

About the Author

Alexander "Sandy" Antunes (born 1967 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a Maryland-area astronomer, author, and role playing game designer. He graduated from Boston University in 1989 with a dual major in astronomy and physics, received a Masters in astronomy from Penn State in 1992, and received his PhD in computational astrophysics from George Mason University in 2005. He was the Maryland Science Center "Science Person of the Month" for May 2007.

The book is stuffed with photos which are near useless without the discussed colors

The book's contents are superb however all of the text and captions that discuss the different wavelengths and meanings of the various color gradations in the books photos are unfortunately ALL printed in black and white! The book is stuffed with photos which are near useless without the discussed colors; sad to see because otherwise I would have given it a 4 or 5. I can't believe the other reviewers didn't mention this obvious flaw... makes me wonder if they are real or not...

Great starting material

Antunes does an excellent job of distilling a broad and complex area into key elements suitable for the hobbyist wanting to commence their exploration of remote sensing for a micro-sat platform. I'm planning on reading through again, and I'd certainly recommend this title (together with it's other volumes) as a worthy read for all those keen on the nascent hobbyist space field.

Necessary. This book and the others he wrote follow an interesting and very necessary trend. When you consider that sending things into space started off as a DIY trend in its entirety we are in good stead.
