Kleypas's original Devil still has my heart.

I hope there's room here for a differing opinion about this book. I know I'm an outlier. The general consensus is that this is a 5-star, or at the very least 4-star, HR. And I would perhaps feel the same way if this were one of the first books Kleypas had ever written. She has done some good research about the field of medicine in the Victorian era, political unrest, the beginning of board games, and a few aspects of feminism and the suffragette movement. And she has created a lovely hero, for the most part, in Gabriel, son of Sebastian and Evie of DEVIL IN WINTER.

Speaking of Sebastian and Evie, their cameos and that of Westcliff of IT HAPPENED ONE AUTUMN made this book better for me, b/c the story itself is not an upgrade on anything Kleypas has written in the past. Perhaps my objections have to do with that trend towards writing second-generation romances, an obvious marketing ploy to take advantage of the popularity of first-generation romance couples but one that usually ends in disappointment and unfulfilled expectations for me. Cases in point for me are Lorraine Heath's Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series spin-off from the earlier Scoundrels of St. James series, and Eloisa James Desperate Duchesses books after #6. And now Kleypas is using readers' love of the H and h of DEVIL IN WINTER to get us excited about this Spring version. IMO, if there had been no references to Gabriel's parentage and no cameo appearances of beloved characters, this would be a 2-star book; it's just that disjointed in plot and uninspired in writing.

But the elephant in the room of my indifference to the story is my actual dislike of the heroine. I've read some reviews here of readers who believe Pandora has undergone personality improvements and become more mature when compared to her behavior in the first two Ravenel books. If so, it wasn't all that obvious to me. I found her to be less than bright, self-obsessed and self-serving, careless of the feelings of others, and unwilling to compromise about anything. It's all about her, her, her. Gabriel gives and gives and gives in this story. Pandora takes and takes and takes.

Why Gabriel falls in love with Pandora is a puzzle to me. He obviously sees things that I don't and he continually praises her and thinks wonderful thoughts about her throughout the book. I'm happy that he is happy, but the book is unsuccessful in getting me to see her good points. She's quirky, but not in a cute way. She's very pretty, I hear, but he could have any beautiful woman he wants. Why her? She's stubborn and opinionated and oh-so-feminist but she's lacking in much logic and reasoning power.

And the story itself? Well, it has some interesting historical and cultural tidbits, but the plot was all over the place and a mishmash of things: Pandora's feminism/ Pandora's ear issues/ Gabriel's supposed dark sexual needs (really?)/ the OW (related to the "needs"/ a tacked-on danger element to show Kleypas's research about Victorian political provocateurs/ a near-death experience to show Kleypas's research about Victorian medical procedures. The writing is, of course, competent b/c it is written by Kleypas, but only that. It's not clever or witty or humorous or warm and fuzzy or poignant or angsty or anything that touched me emotionally or intellectually. It was just a storytelling event.

I was disappointed. I liked the first two books in this new series better. This one is a 2-star book that I gave an extra star for the Wallflowers connection. I've always loved Evie and Sebastian.

Conflicted

I awaited this novel eagerly, and I have to say I am very conflicted about it. I loved some parts and I felt some parts were in need of improvement. Overall, I find the Ravenels have a different feel from other LK historical novels. After checking the Amazon page for her other works it looks like DiS is about 100 pages shorter than the Hathaways or the Wallflowers novels. Now that wouldn't necessarily be bad, but the first half of the book has a pretty thin plot, during which the hero falls in love with the heroine suddenly and without explanation (?!), and then the plot thickens during the last 40% of the book and all the real action is rushed through at the end.

I feel DiS had the potential to be a lot more interesting and compelling, but in its current format it fell short for me.

PROs:
- Very interesting research into Victorian medicine and property law.
- Very good writing.
- Charming beginning.

CONs:

- Somewhat unbelievable heroine (e.g. Suddenly wants to be a business tycoon, despite lack of worldliness. Suddenly very interested in the feminist movement, more or less out of the blue.)
- The hero falls in love with the heroine, for no apparent reason. Suddenly he decides he cannot live without her. His inner thoughts and the process by which he falls in love should be explored in more depth.
- Overly long sex scenes.
- Hero's supposed dark sexual tastes, never quite explained or explored.
- Heroine has overly modern sensibilities for the time period.

Absolutely Lovely!

"You do not want to marry me, my lord. I would be the worst wife imaginable. I'm forgetful and stubborn, and I can never sit still for more than five minutes. I'm always doing things I shouldn't. I eavesdrop on other people, I should and run in public, and I'm a clumsy dancer. And I've lowered my character with a great deal of unwholesome reading material." Pausing to draw breath, she notice that Lord St. Vincent didn't appear properly impressed by her list of faults. "Also, my legs are skinny. Like a stork's."

FINAL DECISION: So rarely does a highly anticipated sequel live up to expectations. While not as good as DEVIL IN WINTER, this book is a worthy successor. Will take a place on my favorites' shelf.

THE STORY: Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent has accidentally compromised an unusual young lady, Lady Pandora Ravenel. Neither, however, wants to marry -- Gabriel because he sees that Pandora is completely unsuitable to be the type of dignified wife he needs; Pandora because she has no intention of allowing any man to control her fate and life. Gabriel is fascinated with Pandora and finds himself drawn to her. Pandora finds in Gabriel a man who listens to her and respects her opinions, but the risk of becoming essentially his to control is something she doesn't want to risk even as she falls for him.

OPINION:

"No matter how she had tried to make herself want what she should want, she knew she would never be happy in a conventional life."

Pandora is an amazing creation. She is neurotic, opinionated, intelligent, oh so clever and yet sweet in a unique way. I loved just about everything about her. She is a different kind of wallflower. A woman who is so brilliant that she has difficulties with the social niceties that society demands. Always the odd person in the group, she has managed to forge a future for herself as a game designer. (I absolutely loved her devotion to her budding career). Everything about her character felt fresh and new and oh so lovely, especially for all of us who feel out of step with what people expect from us.

Gabriel is a hero who is so different from his father and yet has the best qualities of both his parents. He manages to be so incredibly caring and supportive of Pandora. She is a special person and Gabriel knows exactly how to care for her. He is kind and so so dreamy. Sexy and definitely a man in charge, he also has the gentleness of his mother and the benefit of having grown up in a loving family. He is a man who doesn't need to be reformed to be a wonderful man -- he just is.

"Your problem," his sister continued, "is that you're too good at maintaining that facade of godlike perfection. You've always hated for anyone to see that you're a mere mortal. But you won't win this girl that way." She began to dust the sand from her hands. "Show her a few of your redeeming vices, dear. She'll like you all the better for it."

I rarely love a book as much as I loved this one primarily because Gabriel was such a warm loving man and he made it his mission to balance out all the jagged edges of Pandora's life. His giving nature and willingness to put his own needs and desires aside to help fulfill Pandora was so wonderful to read about. He finds Pandora incredibly charming and she brings something to him that makes him want to protect her. And yet, he cannot crush her by forcing her to conform and be "safe".

"It was insane to let a creature so perfectly beautiful and artlessly spirited and vulnerable as his wife venture out into the world that could crush her with casual unconcern, and he had no choice to but allow it. For the rest of his life, he would feel a stab of dread every time she walked out the door, leaving him there with his heart wide open."

I loved this book and if I liked it a smidgen less than the book on Gabriel's parents it is only because the timeless trope of that book -- wallflower and rake -- is probably my favorite. But this one is original and fresh and very wonderful.

"Their marriage would be a partnership, just like their waltzing...not perfect, not always graceful, but they would find their way together."

WORTH MENTIONING: I would buy this book for the Prologue alone where Evangeline and Sebastian from DEVIL IN WINTER are most prominent. One of my all time favorite books and the prologue shows why.

CONNECTED BOOKS: DEVIL IN SPRING is the third book in the Ravenels series. This book is much better if read as part of the series, but a new reader should also include DEVIL IN WINTER which is from Kleypas's Wallflowers series. This book is a direct sequel from that book as it tells the story of the son of the DEVIL IN WINTER couple (who make appearances of their own).

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Great Addition to the Vantilian Tradition

For those familiar with Greg Bahnsen or Cornelius Van Til, the presuppositional methodology presented by Baucham is nothing new; however, the way in which Voddie presents "takes apologetics out of the tower and puts it in the pew," as Patton states in his endorsement of the book. His particular application of this method to preaching, teaching, and discipleship helps to further the work of those in the Vantilian vein of encouraging every believer in engaging the unbelieving worldviews; that apologetics is not only for the "elites," but for every believer.

The book can be divided into two (possibly three) parts:

1.) Introducing the Expository Method (Ch. 1-4)
2.) Application of the Expository Method (Ch. 5-9)

The third possible division of the book would separate chapter 9 "Preaching and Teaching Like an Expository Apologist" and the appendix from chapters 5-8 as 2.) Application for the Layman (5-8) and 3.) Application for Preaching and Teaching (9 w/appendix).

However one divides it, the book is a very practical and challenging addition to the Vantilian tradition, which drives home the point that every Christian everywhere is called to engage in apologetics; and that our goal in apologetics is not to win arguments, but to evangelize — to share the gospel.

Proving and Preaching From Scripture

As the already post-Christian society we live in grows more post-Christian by the day, it is becoming increasingly more important that we pinpoint exactly how to defend our faith, stand for truth, and engage differing opinions lovingly and willingly in conversation. The widespread reason many of us Christians struggle to do this is, as we say, “we don’t know how.” But after reading Expository Apologetics by popular preacher and apologist Voddie Baucham, we will find ourselves eqipped and even motivated for such engagements. In this succinct and practical book, Baucham has helped us see the urgency to be apologists, and helped us with methods and practices for the battle ahead. In this book, we learn about the method of doing “expository apologetics,” a term coined by Baucham to explain his process.

There are three main ideas Baucham stresses in Expository Apologetics–being biblical, being clear, and being conversational (20). Ironically, this is the overall structure of the book. Baucham starts with a firm biblical foundation in his argument for the art of expository apologetics (chapters 1-4). He then discusses how we assimilate the daunting task of apologetics into a clear, easy to remember system for ourselves and for others (chapters 5-6). Finally, Baucham spends a great deal of time talking about how we engage in conversation as apologists (chapters 7-9).

There are a few particular chapters that stood out to me while reading. Chapter 4 is about Paul’s “expository apologetic.” Baucham essentially demonstrates how Paul is a perfect example of someone who uses this technique. Walking through predominately Romans, we see how Paul literally engages with his audience of Jews. While writing the famous epistle, he stops himself periodically to answer objections he knows his audience is bound to have. Paul then firmly refutes such objections with careful exposition of Scripture, combined with elements of logic, philosophy, and metaphor, all designed to help the audience clearly understand. Baucham sums up Paul’s apologetic ministry well here:

“Paul’s approach to apologetics was not dependent solely upon his ability to comprehend and interact with random facts. Instead, he was dependent upon God’s revelation as his primary and ultimate source of authority. Nor is this to say that there were never times when he made reference to truths revealed elsewhere, or that we are prohibited from doing the same. However, we must bear in mind that those things must always be on the periphery of our approach to apologetics as opposed to the center. Scripture must always remain at the center” (75).

Chapter 5 is an excellent defense of the importance of creeds, confessions, and catechisms, and how they support and inform our quest for better apologetics. Baucham, a noted proponent of catechisms, has excellently demonstrated the necessity of using these tools to absorb truth and to communicate it effectively and accurately.

Finally, another highlight chapter is Chapter 8, “The Expository Apologetic Waltz.” I loved the allegory of a waltz and how it is likened to apologetics. I think it’s a great descriptor of how we actually operate in conversations with skeptics or seekers (144-145). Baucham places large emphasis on presuppositional apologetics throughout the book, and shows its importance notably in this chapter. There is even an appendix in the back that is an explicit example of how we do expository apologetics.

There has been quite a bit of writing devoted to doing apologetics, but many of them focus on specific scientific arguments or getting the right counter-punches down. Expository Apologetics, however, desires to help us understand the theological implications for why we enter this arena, and more so how to engage a culture that’s frankly growing tired of listening.

I recommend Expository Apologetics to anyone trying to better learn how to share or defend their faith, and how to do it biblically.

Answering Objections with the Word of God

Cornelius Van Til defined apologetics as the "vindication of the Christian philosophy of life against the various forms of the non-Christian philosophy of life". Voddie Baucham uses this definition as a framework to build a solid apologetic methodology in his newest volume Expository Apologetics: Answering Objections with the Power of the Word. Before you object to the title and claim that Reformed folk are running around creating new titles for a decades-old method, let's dive into this material and find out what's at the heart of the matter.

More than once Voddie claims "the goal is the Gospel". He contends that we must move people from skepticism, or even outright atheism, into a more biblical world view by using the Word as a "bulwark against the tendency to forget how hard it is to believe in the face of constant opposition". He also argues, repeatedly, that we must be committed to apologetics as a consequence, not an innocent bystander of, our commitment to evangelism. That single point makes this volume stand out from the rest not only as an apologetic tool, but one we can all use in our evangelistic enterprise.

This volume does three things very well that I have not found among other introductory works on this vast subject. In Chapter Five we explore the ancient Creeds, Confessions, and Catechism of the church in order to create thriving disciples of Christ. He dispels the myth that apologetics is for the PhD trained Christian in telling us right off the bat that, "when most Christians think apologetics training, they think philosophy, logic, and debate. However the key tools for training the expository apologist are creeds, confessions, and catechisms." He pounds this point in even further by saying that catechism is the best apologetics training tool we have in our arsenal. A bold statement when one thinks of what type of volume this is.

Alright, I know what you're thinking at this point. "Isn't all that other stuff useful though?" Baucham does not seek to dismiss those other disciplines but they must be in service to the Word of God. We must begin our foundation for any argument on the self-revelation of God. He does not mean that everything needs to be quoted chapter and verse in every conversation, though that wouldn't hurt, but we need to move people in the direction of the gospel. That I confess is impossible without mentioning the Word in the process.

The second unique aspect of this volume is the use of the Decalogue or what us commoners call the Ten Commandments. Voddie expands this content across two chapters. He begins by showing the division of the Ten Commandments in that the first four are vertical, meaning that the first four emphasize our duty to God, and the last six emphasize our duty to other people. I admit I have not thought even that deeply about the commandments or their ethical implications in my day-to-day life, an area I plan to build in the coming days. If we're honest many of us have not thought of these Ten Commandments, and why should we? Not many of us are murders, not many of us steal or bear false witness do we?

Many of us forget that God has set a standard of righteousness not only for the believer but for those outside the fold. Voddie does a masterful job of making the material at this point entirely understandable. He points to the three-fold use of the law in expounding on the commanded obedience which has gone out to us and yet we suppress. He tells us that the "Moral Law encompasses laws that have always been and always will be the same for all people in all places and for all times. These laws reflect the very character of God."

Do you see what he did there? He brought us all into account under the Moral Law by saying that it is a reflection of the very character of God. When we are not acting in accord with the Moral Law we are acting in a manner inconsistent with the character of the very God who fashioned us in His image. We are what Paul called, "suppressing the truth in unrighteousness" (Romans 1:18), a very serious indictment indeed. C.S. Lewis thought very highly of the Moral Law which is why he dragged out his material for four chapters in Mere Christianity.

The final thing I think Voddie does extremely well is putting it all together in a way that is imminently useful for the budding apologist. He gives us three steps to uncovering error in peoples world views. Step One tells us that we must show the other person in the conversation that their world view is inconsistent. We can do this by simply beginning a dialogue on almost any topic. Step Two tells us that we must show them where they are counterfeiting the Word of God in their own philosophy. If we are in the Word daily, this step will be a bit easier for us. Step Three drops the bomb on them when we show them what the real thing looks like.

This volume should be handed out like candy on Halloween. Christians need to be soaked in the Word and understand their own world views before they can engage those with opposing ones. We as parents must drench our children in the Word which teaches them how to think and how to hold up world views to the light of the Gospel. Expository Apologetics gives us the tools we need to begin to use our minds for the glory of God. Surely we must go deeper but this is an excellent foot in the doorway to a house bought and furnished just for us. We have the world at our fingertips and they are desperately searching for something true, good, and holy. We have all of those things living in us by the inheritance of the Holy Spirit. Why not share that with out neighbors, coworkers, and those we meet on the subway?

A Review of Money, Greed, and God

I will cut to the chase - this is going to be a very, very positive book review. This is an excellent book, and I will explain why I am so fond of it in just a moment. But since I write a lot of book reviews, and the one negative thing I have to say about this book is something I have never said before, I will just get it out of the way up front so I can move on to the real review: I wish I had written this book. Quite literally, Jay Richards took the need for me to do something I was very serious about doing (some day) right off of my "to-do" list. A book for laymen of faith that provides a Biblical defense of free market capitalism is in tremendous need. John Schneider's The Good of Affluence" is a fantastic contribution ([...] but its focus is exegetical and theological. Dinesh D'Souza's The Virtue of Prosperity is delightful, but it is specifically contextualized to an era that was practically gone by the time the book was published (the dot com techno-affluence world). A slew of treatises exist that provide an underlying defense of capitalism, but the sad reality is that most books defending the morality of a free market ideology were not written by people of faith, or at least not people publicly identifying their faith-based presuppositions. The book concept I have been so excited to see is one that was (a) Written for an audience of laymen, (b) Written for an audience of professing believers, (c) Written with an underlying theological credibility and understanding, and (d) Written with a very specific economic expertise. Perhaps I was fooling myself to think I was the person to tackle such an endeavor, but I am happy (and sad) to report that my vision has now been fulfilled. For Jay Richards' new book is clear, highly readable, wonderfully written, Biblically literate, and economically irrefutable. In all serious, Richards has written a crucial, vital book. I only pray that it receives the audience it desperately warrants.

I tend to be an overly-optimistic person, but I have been predicting the final nail in the coffin of the relationship between the church and today's "youth generation" for some time. I believe on the scholastic and doctrinal side of the faith, generations of in-fighting and dead religion have pulverized the chances of young people continuing on as "church people" once they reach full adulthood. On the pietistic side, a decade or more of insulting and inane attempts to reach the youth culture have backfired in dramatic fashion, as church "leaders" have found out the hard way just how good young people are at detecting phonies, even when they are wearing really cool Hawaiian shirts. My prediction is that the contemporary church's utter failure to speak to young "twenty-somethings" about the subject of career, money, prosperity, and ambition will be the final nail in the coffin of this relationship. No event will more solidify this than the church's complicity in present times with the forces of socialism and egalitarianism. It is the most abhorrent of theological errors that has allowed the demonization of wealth to take place in pews across this country week after week, preying upon people's natural tendencies to envy, to covet, and to resent. It is inexcusable that the cause of global poverty has been outsourced to the federal behemoth we ironically call "government", and that blindly putting aid in the hands of third world dictators has been labeled "Christ-like". Indeed, N.T. Wright is perhaps my favorite theologian on the planet, but any address he has ever offered on anything remotely connected to subjects economic or socio-political has amounted to nothing more than rank collectivism, and N.T. Wright is one of the sharp ones! The Christian church has failed, and failed in a profound way, to teach the Biblical edict on work, prosperity, incentive, private property, sound money, investment, and freedom. Western Europe has been a goner for some time, but in recent times the uniquely capitalistic United States of America has been attacked by forces of class warfare and Robin Hood-economics that would have been considered unthinkable just a few years ago. The response of the church to the demonization of the business class and the centralization of so many market forces has been either consent and agreement, or at best complete silence. I do not believe it is possible that such a blurring of Biblical teaching on risk and reward will possibly endear the youth of today to the church of tomorrow. How can tomorrow's leaders possibly take serious the idea that ours is a faith of stewardship and morality when we sit idly by and condone an economic system of redistribution? Free market capitalism is alive and well, unless one is looking inside the halls of the secular academy, or sadly, the sanctuaries of today's churches. May we reverse this course before it is entirely too late.

Richards' book is to be commended for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is its delightful structure and flow. His credibility is enhanced by his autobiography - like so many people of faith, his path to a Biblical view of money and economics went through the pietistic town of socialism. But even more so than most secular books on the subject, Richards uses a basic checklist of economic errors to methodically walk through the pertinent topics. If only every believer would take the time to evaluate their own thinking in the light of these common economic fallacies! Richards tackles every popular objection in circulation to the idea that the Bible provides the foundation for free market prosperity and incentive. He decimates the intellectual error of Communism, and lays out the step-by-step case for an integration of modern capitalism with the Christian faith. His treatment of the subject is simple, but filled with profound insights. The book is inundated with Scripture, yet he does not sacrifice economic literacy for the cause of Biblical fidelity. There is a tremendous nod to the great champions of capitalism (Adam Smith and F.A Hayek, in particular), yet he avoids the error of suggesting that their insights are somehow superior to the text of Scripture. Rather, he shows through careful reasoning and persuasion that the invisible hand of the marketplace is a God-created phenomena, and that the current practice of maligning the pursuit of wealth is not at all compatible with the Bible. I believe the book is absolutely read-able for high school age students, and yet the vast majority of adults I know ought to read it as well. It is balanced, comprehensive, and irrefutably logical. I can not recommend it strongly enough, and I truly do pray that it will gain the audience it deserves before the cause of freedom and opportunity is completely monopolized by the forces of secularism.

In a time where the Christian Left claims to have a monopoly on Christian social thought and economics, the Acton Institute stands alone intelligently proclaiming the cause of markets and morality. Their task is a gigantic one, but they perform it admirably, and with as much intellectual firepower as any organization out there. They have an incredible set of shoulders to stand on, and they are not afraid to be shot at while they do their goods work.

Very comprehensive book that gave me the right overview and motivated me to pursue a Nutrition training program. It helped me understand how various food elements may affects health and overall body reactions. Definitely a bible for anyone interested to learn about nutrition.

Fantastic find from a friend

I geek out on food books. Been reading about all the diets to find a convention that works for me. This book captures a lot of items I already knew (eat vegetables & fruit) but goes into detail about which foods do what. Just as any diet book, one will not agree with everything, but I found myself understanding the science & agreed with 95% of the book. I have put a lot of trust into this book because now I have began taking suggested supplements for the brain. I have many books, China Study, The Zone Diet, Primal Blueprint; but felt this book was more accurate with real science. This has became my favorite diet book to date.

Great book

It was recommended to me by a friend who used to work as a personal trainer. I found it very informative and educational. I like how the studies referenced were listed as well so one can do more research if interested.

I started to improve my diet while reading this book and have already seen and felt the improvement. Sure you still need to read it with your critical thinking hat on as you read any book. It is definitely a book worth reading.

Gripping and Painfully Honest Story

I absolutely fell in love with this book and the characters. This is a very adult, very difficult story and is certainly not for everyone; it is painfully real, messy and passionate and I loved every single word.

"I wanted to find someone who belonged with me like the stars belonged with the sky. Someone I could get lost in, who would make me forget about reality for a while, who would adore me second to none."

Affairytale is a book that fascinated me, at times made me cringe, enthralled me and in the end, captivated me with its realism, beauty and ultimately very hopeful message. This is the non-fiction account of the author meeting her soulmate, while promised to another. C.J. actually meets Grant, the great love of her life, before she marries Levi, the father of her child. She knows in her heart of hearts that Levi is not the right man for her, but he was a good father and she wanted to make a home for their child.

"I craved him. I needed him, I was myself when I was with him. I had married the wrong person, there I had become the wrong person."

This story is gripping on so many levels. The reader is a witness to the destruction of a marriage. It should have never occurred in the first place and it takes a very long time for the author to come to terms with the reality of her situation. The story takes place over many years and is much, much more than just the tale of two people destined to be together. It is an exploration of becoming the best person you can be, living each day to the fullest and living your life with honesty. That might seem out of place in a review of a book like this but events unfolded the way they were meant to, and in a way that was gritty, painful, real and finally, very uplifting and joyous.

I didn’t always agree with C.J.’s actions or her behavior toward Levi. But she and Grant were always meant to be, even if took them years to get there. Her struggle with chronic back pain, along with the realities of her brutally painful relationship with Levi, were so honest that I could not put this book down and still find myself thinking about it days after finishing.

There is no question that this story is not for everyone. But it is an honest account of two people’s path to happiness and truth and for that alone, I applaud the author for putting her story out there. The inclusion of text messages and love letters was brilliant and only added to the feelings and emotions I have for this book! If you are looking for a very challenging and very thought-provoking story, then do no miss Affairytale. It is one of my favorite books this year.

Love always finds a way

Affairytale is a memoir, a story about a young woman who marries the wrong man, and as the years go by, finds herself unable to deny the true love of her life. An honest account of an affair, and falling in love. It's heartbreaking, yet beautiful. I can't judge CJ's story, what's right or wrong, I haven't lived her life. In the end, I simply wish them all happiness and love.

"I had married the wrong person, therefore I’d become the wrong person. No ironically, I was having an affair that was turning me into the right person.”

The path to happily ever after isn't always straight and narrow, sometimes it's messy. We all make choices, as flawed beings, sometimes those choices may not seem right. At some point in our lives, we will all bare our share of shame, disappointment and weakness. That's life, and that's love.

"If all marriages are unhappy and take work, then mine was no different. I stayed because I was foolish enough to believe those things were true."

CJ has found her soul-mate, but unfortunately, she was already tied to another man. CJ's account of her marriage to Levi was heartbreaking. I ached for them both, the struggle, the lack of communication, it was frustrating, and I found myself angry at times. But sometimes we marry the wrong person, we fall in and out of love. People lie, and they cheat, but at the bottom of it all, most of us just searching for a bit of happiness.

"I wanted that. I wanted to find someone who belonged with me like the stars belonged with the sky. Someone I could get lost in, who would make me forget about reality for a while, who would adore me second to none."

I can't imagine exposing myself the way CJ has, writing her story, opening herself up to the judgement of others. It's brave. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, so this review was somewhat difficult to write. How do you rate someone's love story? I'm not sure you can. While the journey may have been messy, the outcome, CJ and Grant's love for each other, is beautiful, and there is no shame in that. I'm glad they found each other. The writing was wonderful, and the story has a slow building pace, filled with honesty and passion, that kept me turning the page.

Emotional, gut-wrenching and a very addictive page turner. Read this book!!

This memoir was a beautifully written, emotional, and gut wrenching account of a woman's journey to be with the man she was destined to spend the rest of her life with. To get there though, she had to believe she deserved to be happy and was worthy of that love and happiness.

CJ had always wanted the fairytale of being happily married with children. Even from the outset she knew that Levi wasn't the one but she thought if she put in enough effort for both of them she could make it work. When she accidentally fell pregnant and had Dani at 21 after 2 years of dating Levi her fate had been sealed. CJ and Levi had a very volatile relationship that only escalated once Dani was born, they were complete opposites, had nothing in common and their relationship was toxic. Levi brought out a side in CJ that no one else could and it was not a person she liked.

She discovered that she didn't love him and most times she actually hated him and how he made her feel. None the less CJ believed that Dani deserved for her parents to be married and so out of obligation, CJ married Levi when Dani was 4.

CJ met Grant one summer shortly after Dani was born, he was her brothers best friend and they hit it off instantly. Being with him was easy and fun and she found that she was attracted to him in every way. For years she would see Grant each weekend in Summer and then not again until the following summer. There was no denying their mutual attraction and that they gravitated toward each other whenever they were together but it went no further.

She tried everything possible to forget Grant, avoided seeing him at places she knew he would be at. Threw herself into improving her marriage and even considered moving her family to another state just to get as far away as possible from the man that had consumed all her thoughts. All that did was make her even more miserable and hate Levi and her marriage even more. When her health deteriorated she became depressed, bitter and angry.

At the lowest point in her life Grant and CJ paths cross again and after 9 years of torment, admiring from afar, and stolen moments together they finally admit their true feelings and decide they can't be apart any longer. They start seeing each other in secret and not long after CJ started the divorce process. CJ and Grant's love was a true once in a lifetime love that most can only every wish for and when they were finally able to be together out in the open it warmed my heart.

This account is raw and real and ugly and beautiful all rolled into one. It's an addictive page turner and I loved it.

Thank you C J English for sharing your story with us and I am so glad that you finally found your way to happiness and the love of your life because life is short and everyone deserves to be happy. I commend you for your honesty and bravery in putting you life on display for all to see.
