Clear definitive guide to predictable performance...

Interested in barrel racing? Interested in better communication between horse and rider? Do you ride gymkhana and want to be better in every facet? This book is for you.

I bought this book for my wife but the reward of watching her progress has been all mine.

The exercises for both horse and rider are well documented. Success criteria are clearly documented and clean progression to more precise riding are achievable through consistent practice. Following the books instructions allows a deterministic approach to barrel racing and understanding where to tune your riding and your horse. I also see improvement in event riding by earlier recognition of problems for easier resolution. Buy this book.

Finally, finally there is a top-notch guide to fitness for BOTH horse & rider! Any equestrian knows that we don't just "sit there", but the muscles and coordination to work with our 1200-lb teammate make us true athletes. This book is well laid out and easy to use. HIGHLY recommend to any rider wanting to up their game and get the best from yourself and your horse.

Quintessential RF text.

Smith's text is one of the most comprehensive and well-written textbooks in the RF field. It vividly covers many essential RF topics which many books cover in more vague terms, or not at all. Two fat chapters on phase-locked loops explore the topic in informative depth. An excellent section on oscillators is presented, utilizing lucid and creative presentation techniques. Covers crystals, VCO's, power amplifiers, and even has a thorough chapter on resonant circuits and transformers. A wonderfully solid background chapter in small-signal transistor amplifier theory is also given. Conatins a good number of helpful examples. This text is most useful to the electrical engineer with a previous introduction to the concepts covered. Does not really cover S parameters or use of the Smith Chart. One fault of the book is the large number of typos it has, but if you can spot them, the hunt is well worth the content the book has to offer.

Substandard Text or Reference on RF Electronics.

This is a required text for a graduate level RF electronics course I am taking. I am very disappointed with this text. There are multiple mistakes and misprints throughout. It seems that the book was proofed by someone who is not familiar with electronic symbology and notation. There are many instances where inconsistant notation will be used within a single example problem! The author is very short on many subjects and longwinded on others. This book makes for a confusing and frustrating read despite the distinguished IEEE brand on the cover. My professor even commented on the sloppyness of the author. I have had to buy additional books to suppliment my studies. This is not a good reference or text book....Coming from someone who has read multiple technical text books...Beware of this one.

A Genuine First for Understanding Rumi

This is the first Rumi book I've seen placing the original Farsi side by side with the English translation-a big plus for English speakers studying Farsi. But, more importantly, where literature often gets lost in translation, in the case of this book, the translations preserve the purity and the colorful nature that is Rumi's poetry. What's more: the translations are rich in beauty and depth as they seamlessly capture every word of the original Farsi without becoming overly verbose or without foregoing all the original poetic elements. A book to be prized by all Rumi lovers. Props to Mr. Arabian for crafting such a masterpiece and for introducing English speakers to this side of Rumi.

Centralia, Pennsylvania, lived and died by anthracite coal. The town’s population peaked at 2,761 in 1890, but by 1981 had dwindled to just over 1,000—not unusual for a Pennsylvania mining town. But today Centralia has no more than a dozen inhabitants, and they are expected to be gone before long. The reason: an underground fire that has burned since 1962 in the labyrinth of abandoned coal mines beneath Centralia, making parts of the town uninhabitable.
By 1981 the fire was sending deadly gases into homes, making children sick, and one day a twelve-year-old boy dropped into a steaming hole and almost died as a U.S. congressman toured nearby. Environmental Justice

This book provides a detailed description of the events and the people of Centralia during this disaster. The fire details are just general but the fight among the residents on how to combat the fire and deal with the state and federal governments are the most interesting parts. It is a story of environmental justice, or the lack of it. Other fires in Pennsylvania, in larger, more well-to-do areas received greater attention.

This book is well written and extremely informative about the ongoing Centralia tragedy.
It is a haunting history that seems more likely to have happened in some Eastern European
village than in the United States. The author addresses the human interest aspect as well
as the scientific and bureaucratic. High schools and colleges around the nation should require this book on their reading lists for science/ecology and government/poli-sci classes.

Excellent book on the Centrailia mine fire. The book is about the people living with the mine fire and the struggles to be heard by the gov't. I have been to Centralia. It's greepy and intriguing wanting you to learn more. The first book is excellent. This one is even better.

Excellent! Required reading for any true Rock & Roll fan.

This book does an excellent job of telling the story of what Led Zeppelin was all about. The text is extremely well written, and the photographs are incomparable. Through mostly visual images anyone, even an outsider to the Zeppelin story can get an accurate idea of why the four band members did what they did, and the passion that went into their work. Led Zeppelin was a band made up of talented musicians who loved their music. They fought long and hard to stay true to their idea of what rock and roll was all about. Anyone who feels that Nirvana or Pearl Jam is the best rock (it's all rock, no matter what you call it) band ever needs to read this book. Eddie Vedder can fight Ticket Master "for the fans", and Kurt Cobain may have taken his own life, but remember, Led Zeppelin never released "Stairway to Heaven" as a single. Wonder why?

This book came out in 1991, the history is accurate (where did you learn the riff to "the Crunge" was written in 1964?) The book covers what not too many books cover - the collectivity of some of the records, Some of the major LZ fans contributed to this book so thats good enough for me. I enjoyed reading it ( it took me 3 sessions to do so.) There are actually three authors for this book (although one is Neal Preston - he contributed photos.) Four stars!

Love the simplicity and interpretations behind the art

It's always fun to see an artist go through different moods, allowing for a variation of their artwork to shine through. What better way to connect with your inner-child than to allow yourself to play with art? There are no inhibitions in this artwork, and that's admirable. A couple of my favorites are "Balloons", "Lizard Skin #2", and "Roads Diverging". Nicely done. Thank you for the reminder to release my inner critic and to just create art.

This richly illustrated book traces the history and evolution of blue and white in China, first during the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), when the Mongols ruled all of Asia, creating an environment in which blue and white could travel swiftly as far as the Mediterranean. In the fifteenth century the Chinese became enamoured of their own product, while at the same time the Ming potters were susceptible to ideas from the Islamic world and commercial and aesthetic pressures during the colonial period of European expansion. From the sixteenth century onwards, passion for collecting became a major influence on the concept of chinoiserie.

Finally John Carswell shows how the combined efforts of scholars, collectors and archaeologists have illuminated how, why and when blue and white developed and has made such a major impact on world civilization. The stunning illustrations are from museums and private collections around the world and include some never before published.

Hurricane Katrina was the kind of event a reporter waits his entire life to cover. It was especially satisfying doing so for The New Yorker. While newspaper and television reporters chased about feverishly in their attempt to feed the insatiable daily news monster, I enjoyed the time to go deep and peel back the tragedy in all its complexity. I wrote half a dozen short “Talk of the Town” pieces and two long articles over the following year.

Even working for The New Yorker, though, covering Katrina and its aftermath became frustrating. The longer I stayed in New Orleans, the more I understood that huge as Katrina was, it is hardly the most interesting thing about New Orleans. New Orleans is the most unusual place I’ve ever been—complicated, sensual, self-contradictory, hilarious, infuriating—and it was the place itself, not the tragedy that befell it, that I wanted to write about.

So when my wife and I thought about writing a book, it wasn’t a “Katrina book” we had in mind. We finally settled on interweaving the life stories of nine New Orleanians—rich and poor and in between, black and white and in between, male and female and in between. Nine Lives begins in 1965, right after the last time a big part of the city flooded during a hurricane. By this we want to say: New Orleans was there a long time before Hurricane Katrina and it will be there a long time after. Katrina doesn’t show up in Nine Lives until past page 200.

We had two guiding principles: No bad guys, and all happy endings. All nine of these people are, in their own way, heroes. And while we could have ended any of their stories on a down note, we instead end all at a moment of ascendance. There are many ways of looking at New Orleans, but this is how we chose to do so in Nine Lives.

We were careful not to make Nine Lives the kind of "issue" book one must read to understand current events. We want people to read it for the same reason they read The Kite Runner or The Bridges of Madison County—out of love of the characters and a warm, delicious eagerness to see their lives unfold. Starred Review. Reporter Baum (Citizen Coors) arrived in New Orleans two days after the levees broke after Hurricane Katrina. He admits his initial accounts of the disaster were flawed, but with this captivating collection of nine linked profiles, Baum has rectified what he claims was his narrow interpretation of events. While covering Katrina and its aftermath for the New Yorker, I noticed that most of the coverage, my own included, was so focused on the disaster that it missed the essentially weird nature of the place where it happened. Baum begins the narrative with the 1965 battering of the Ninth Ward by Hurricane Betsy and concludes in 2007. He captures the essence of the city through the lives of nine characters over 40 years, bracketed by two epic hurricanes, people such as Billy Grace, the king of Carnival and member of New Orleans elite; Tim Bruneau, the city cop haunted by images of Katrinas destruction; and transsexual JoAnn Guidos, who finds a home and, following Katrina, a sense of purpose. Baum, an empathetic storyteller, has nearly perfectly distilled the events, providing readers with a sensuous portrait of a place that can be better understood as the best organized city in the Caribbean rather than the worst organized city in the United States. Baums chronicle leaves readers with a bittersweet understanding of what Americans lost during Hurricane Katrina. (Feb.)

What Dan Baum accomplishes in Nine Lives, though, is more than a time line of events. Critics unanimously praised the author's approach and style, and they compared Baum's effort to the documentary work of Studs Terkel and John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, even if, at times, his jumpy, snapshot approach breaks the narrative flow. Baum, who immersed himself in the lives and culture that form the heart of his book, digs deep in search of the Crescent City's identity, coming as close as anyone has to defining the complexities of America's most haunted -- and, in many ways, its most elusive -- city.

The Real New Orleans

I wish that I had heard about this book years ago. As a former New Orleanian, I was reluctant to read another "outsider" dishing up sentimental goop about Katrina. But, Dan Baum, "gets it." He portrays the real city and its wildly varied denizens. His approach of following nine real citizens through their personal stories provides a view of New Orleans that tourists never see. The "characters" are amazing in themselves. His interviewing and reportorial skills morph into compelling human stories that define the term, "creative non-fiction." Think about it: who else do you know who has/had a personal relationship with a former King Of Rex, "Tootie Montana, Big Chief of the Wild Magnolias" Mardi Gras Indians and a jazz musician who is also the Orleans Parish coroner??

I fell in love with New Orleans all over again.

New Orleans: a town like no other

I chose this book because I love to read about New Orleans and it's history
I had the pleasure of living there for about five years in the mid nineties
I am originally from Scotland and was living in southern California
My husband took a job down there where we stayed in furnished homes in the garden district uptown and across the river in algiers point
When we first arrived i thought it was a bit scary and dirty but after living there for some time it really got attached to that town
It is such a unique place with a European feel filled with history character and wonderful people
I cried when we left
I feel the author has captured the feeling of new Orleans in such a thoughtful and beautiful way and it made me so sad to think that with Katrina the stories history and character of the place may now be gone
It has been one of my favorite books about the crescent city and I will always have very fond memories of my short time there where two of my son's were born
I read a lot and have never reviewed a book but i was so moved by this one

Fantastic Read

I wanted to read the book before having a personal visit with one of the "interview-ees" in the book. It was FANTASTIC. I have done alot of volunteeer time in the Lower 9th, both before, and after Katrina. This was a beautiful, stellar, could not wait to digest every word sort of book. Engaging, sharp, and forward-moving. It perfectly places you into that miasma of beauty, culture, uniqueness, and love/pain/sorrow/joy that it is, to be there, from there. I have re-read it ten times. It is in my top three of "go-to" books because, as a volunteer there, it speaks, and resonates on such a depp level. Dan Baum did an absolutely stellar job capturing time and place. A great read, and it tells the deep abiding love of place, sorrow of place, and redemption and abiding love of place. I absolutely loved every word , and highly recommend!
