Very entertaining and well-crafted.

This volume is a must-have for anyone who enjoys classic newspaper comics featuring adventure and romance. Ray Moore was a top notch artist. His figures were always in correct proportion. He used a variety of perspective angles, close ups and other techniques that now are associated with solid film work. His characters show the appropriate emotions and body language for the situation. Also, his drawings progress the story clearly. The reader doesn't have to rely on the word balloons to understand the plot progression.
For the time period these strips ran, the art captures the style of the 1930s wonderfully. Best of all, there is very minimal racial caricature in the drawing of various indigenous tribes compared to most strips of this age. Yes, the natives are depicted in jungle attire and living in huts, but in no way are they portrayed as less than normal intelligence or capability.
This brings me to the writing of Lee Falk. While the Phantom indeed uses superstition and fear to his advantage, the conversations held by the indigenous people are literate and rational. This makes all characters add value to the plot.
This series is a nice change from most comics in that there are no two pane story resolutions. The artists weren't in a huge hurry to shift to the next episode and instead continue story threads at a smooth pace.
This volume uses bright paper of good quality to contrast with the gray tones and inks. I look forward to the next volume and Sunday volumes by Moore. One early April 1937 strip is missing which has an important scene. Maybe Hermes Press will make it available to book owners (I have a 30 year old book of the Sky Band series which I was able to refer to.) Don't let that cause you to miss out on this.

Who was that masked man?
By Uncle Mickey
The original and the best -- Lee Falk and Ray Moore's first three daily stories on Kit Walker, the Ghost Who Walks. As one who missed the first edition of this collection, my deepest thanks go to Hermes Press for reprinting these wonderful stories. I read this fast-paced adventure book all in one sitting! The year 1936 will forever be "The Year of the Phantom."

"Phantom Collections From Hermes Press Are Great Bargin" Old Jungle Saying
By Sir Steven
My original review was a 1 because of the great delay in publishing this volume, I missed the first and will not miss any others.
I have read a few of these stories in other volumes but it is nice to have the complete set. The text pages give a nice history of the strip and a great set up of the character and how he changed rather quickly One small negative: the index of Phantom stories at the end of the volume is missing a page. Wonder if it is just my volume. Also one or two pages seem to be cropped or miss cut. I don't think it is by design.
As for the stoires themselves, high adventure with the original 20th century superhero! The Phantom strikes fear in the hearts of the bad guys and we love it! We love Dianna's great spirit as well! Give him the worst and the Phantom endures and returns for vengeance!
Pirates and Sky Bandits beware-you won't see him but the Phantom is here!
The Phantom is one of the great action heroes in US and World fiction! Enjoy it again or for the first time!
I have to get back to reading the book now!
HERMES please hurry with Volume 2 of the Colored Sunday Strips!
